KOI Dessert Kitchen & Frozen High Tea

Enjoy spectacular desserts beyond your wildest imagination at KOI Dessert Kitchen in Chippendale and Ryde.

Koi Dessert Kitchen

KOI, which stands for ‘Kids of Ike’, is a dessert “kitchen” operated by brothers Ronald, Arnold and Reynold Poernomo. Reynold came to national attention through his appearances on Masterchef – and indeed, a walk into KOI reveals a showcase of the most amazing looking cakes that our eyes have seen.

Koi Dessert Kitchen

The desserts are single serve or cake-sized which are perfect for parties.

Koi Dessert Kitchen

The three brothers aim to deliver KOI diners an experience that arouses and excites the senses. The kitchen is really more like a cafe serving just desserts. They do put on high teas, and we attended their “In Summer” high tea, inspired by Frozen the Musical.

Koi Dessert Kitchen

The High Tea is available Saturdays and Sundays only from 9th January – 31st January at KOI Chippendale and KOI Ryde.

Koi Dessert Kitchen

The high tea comes in adult and child servings. We opted for two adult servings for the three of us to share as hubby isn’t a dessert person and the kid doesn’t like the savouries. The kid version has two less dessert items.

Koi Dessert Kitchen

“In Summer” High Tea includes a selection of savoury bites, “In Summer” inspired desserts and free-flowing tea or coffee.

“IN SUMMMER” HIGH TEA MENU
Eternal Winter (raspberry, vanilla, chocolate, strawberry)
Jade (chocolate, raspberry)
In summer Jar (passionfruit, coconut, pineapple)
Cherry Jazz (cherry, raspberry, jasmine, blood orange, almond)
Salted Caramel Macaron
Chamomile and Honey Scone
Brik Pastry, Tomato Cream, Lump Fish Roe
Chicken and Leek Pie
Tomato on Toast with Feta

$70/person
(Including free flow of tea and coffee)

We had a vegetarian version which had a mushroom pie and tomato cream roll without the fish roe.

High Tea in Sydney at the Gunners’ Barracks

Gunners' Barracks Sydney

High Tea in Sydney at the Gunners’ Barracks

Enjoy a classic high tea at Sydney’s historic Gunners’ Barracks. Perched on the side of a cliff in Mosman, the Gunners’ Barracks offers afternoon tea with unparalleled water views.

Gunners' Barracks, Sydney

We have been enjoying afternoon tea (or high tea) at the Gunners’ Barracks for a very long time. Hubby and I were married here, so it will always hold a special place in our hearts. It’s very hard to match the Gunners’ Barracks for their superb food, service and spectacular location.

Our latest visit was as part of our 10 year wedding celebration. High Tea in Sydney at the Gunners’ Barracks is a very special outing, so it seemed very fitting to return 10 years later. Haven’t those 10 years just gone in a flash.

Gunners' Barracks, Sydney

The Gunners’ Barracks offers an array of tea services, depending what day you visit.

Morning Tea

Morning Tea is offered Monday to Friday only, from 10am to midday. It’s a smaller menu with a set selection of cakes, pastries and finger sandwiches, with your selection of a Ronnefeldt tea or espresso coffee ($40).

Children’s High Tea

This gorgeous high tea is especially tailored to kids, with a beautiful range of child-friendly petit pastries, finger sandwiches, scone, jam and cream, choice of hot chocolate,
soft drink or juice ($40).

Gunners' Barracks, Sydney

Each high tea comes with a selection of tea, and the Gunners’ Barracks has an incredible tea menu. The tea pots come with enough tea for two cups, and the staff visit throughout the tea service to top up pots with more hot water.

The traditional high tea includes a large scone per person, with berry jam and cream, an array of savouries (which included a frittata square and a little fried ball), three finger sandwiches each (ours included egg, chicken and mayo and a salad and salmon sandwich from memory), plus an assortment of pastries including macarons and chocolate cake.

As a vegetarian I was given a seperate stand with vego alternative sandwiches and pastries. My sweets were the same, with the inclusion of a chocolate dipped strawberry in lieu of one of the tarts.

The kids’ high tea is adorable, with plenty of items to tempt tiny taste palates.

The food is exceptional. Fresh, light sandwiches, fluffy scones, and delectable sweets. The menu is always changing, but the tea remains similar.

The Gunners’ is right next to the Georges Head lookout, perfect for taking kids before or afterwards to run off any steam (or sugar!).

Claris High Tea at the Sofitel Darling Harbour Sydney

This is without a doubt one of the best high teas I have ever done. The food was impeccable – every single item delicious – but it was more than that. The staff were attentive, asking if we would like more tea and how was everything, and the atmosphere was so relaxing. I loved the beautiful view over the harbour and how much space was between the tables. It felt like our own private tea party.

I also loved how our vegetarian substitutes were created thoughtfully – not just the same sandwich with the meat protein removed, for example.

The food was also all very accessible for kids, pretty and simple, without sacrificing the taste for adults who have more developed taste palates.
