The Grounds of Alexandria

Grounds of Alexandria

The Grounds of Alexandria

The iconic Grounds of Alexandria is an iconic cafe, restaurant, bar, garden, bakery & patisserie, coffee roastery, animal farm, florist and more.

Grounds of Alexandria

The Grounds opened in April 2012 on the site of a former pie factory in the industrial area of Alexandria. The concept for the Grounds, by the entrepreneurial duo Ramzey Choker and Jack Hanna, was to create a thriving urban sanctuary to bring people together.

Grounds of Alexandria

Since its opening The Grounds of Alexandria has grown and changed to include two dine-in venues: The Cafe, The Potting Shed, an outdoor takeaway dining area, multiple event spaces, a florist, kids play area and animal petting area.

Grounds of Alexandria

The Grounds is extremely popular and is most busy Friday through to Sunday. There is parking on site, however it can be hard to find a spot on these popular days.

Grounds of Alexandria

I highly recommend booking a table in advance to guarantee a spot, or grabbing takeaway and eating it outdoors.

Grounds of Alexandria

The Grounds of Alexandria hosts fantastic seasonal events such as Easter brunch and Mother’s Day high teas and themed installations – the current one at writing being The Secret Garden, which you can learn more about here.

Grounds of Alexandria

The Grounds is stroller and wheelchair-friendly, kid-friendly and even dog-friendly. Dogs can dine in The Cafe but must have an outdoor table and must not sit on the chairs.

acre Artarmon: Bar, Cafe & Bakery

acre Artarmon

Enjoy farm-inspired food grown on-site at acre Artarmon. This open-air urban oasis features indoor and outdoor seating, picnic style areas, kids’ play area and chicken coop.

Acre Artarmon

We are frequent visitors to acre at Camperdown Commons, so were extremely keen to check out the new acre in the family, located at the HomeHQ Artarmon.

acre Artarmon is a cafe, restaurant, bar and bakery set within sprawling indoor and outdoor gardens that produce the food that goes straight into kitchen to produce the meals.

Acre Artarmon

Featuring local and exotic fruit trees, a kitchen garden, vertical plantings & hydroponic growing systems and planted pergolas, acre Artarmon is a fascinating place to dine and discover, where you can browse the gardens where your food was grown. You know your meal is going to be made with super fresh produce when you can see it growing on the vines!

Acre Artarmon

There are several dining options at acre Artarmon. There is a cafe bakery with freshly baked items that can be quickly consumed or taken to go, such as pies, sandwiches, quiche and delicious croissants.

Acre Artarmon Acre Artarmon

The restaurant extends inside and out onto the terrace, with a breakfast menu offered until 11:30am and a dedicated lunch menu. The breakfast menu features traditional brekkie staples like eggs as well as dishes that hero the fresh plants such as tomatoes and avocado.

The lunch menu offers delicious homemade pizzas and an eclectic menu with burgers, salads and pasta. There are plenty of vegetarian and vegan dishes on both menus and the kids’ menu has the usual favourites, served up in a generous portion. Adults might want to try a garden-inspired cocktail.

Acre Artarmon Acre Artarmon

We ordered the Kids Margarita Pizza ($10) and Smoked Beetroot, Roasted Pumpkin Salad with Ricotta ($22). Kids also get a cute colouring in sheet if they like.

Gordon’s Cafe Clovelly: Kid-friendly Cafes in Sydney

Gordons Cafe Clovelly Sydney

Family-friendly Gordon’s is a relaxed cafe in Sydney’s Clovelly, serving healthy fresh food, a stone’s throw from Gordons Bay.

Gordons Cafe Clovelly Sydney

Gordon’s is open 7 days a week, serving all-day breakfast and lunch, plus selected evenings (Thursday, Friday, Saturday). This is a friendly neighbourhood cafe where the focus is on serving the locals delicious, wholesome, seasonal food. Gordon’s is fully licensed and has a collection of Australian and Italian wines plus Mountain Goat craft beer on tap.

There is seating available both inside and out. The cafe is extremely popular so on weekends, I suggest calling ahead for a reservation.

Gordons Cafe Clovelly Sydney

The friendly staff offered us a kids’ menu/colouring-in sheet plus crayons on arrival (thanks!). The kids offerings are pretty standard and reasonably priced. Even though it was only 10am, a kids’ pasta was ordered – a excellent sized portion and thanks for being so flexible to the staff.

Gordons Cafe Clovelly Sydney

Hubby and I both ordered the Gordons Stack (with layered tomato, haloumi, avocado, poached eggs & bacon on sourdough topped w. hollandaise & served w. mixed leaf
$19). I requested mine without hollandaise and bacon and was offered a vege alternative – I chose spinach.

We also ordered the Mixed Berry Smoothie ($7.50).

The food arrived quickly and was fresh, pretty and delicious. An absolute neighborhood gem!

The Coal Loader and Coal Loader Cafe, Waverton

The Coal Loader Waverton Sydney

The Coal Loader Centre for Sustainability and Coal Loader Cafe, Waverton

The Coal Loader is an historic venue in North Sydney, including a large green space, community garden, elevated platform with harbour views, bush walks and the Coal Loader Cafe.

The Coal Loader Centre for Sustainability is located on the Waverton peninsula. It’s a fascinating place to delve into Sydney’s past and also learn about its sustainable future.

The Coal Loader Waverton

Coal Loader History

The Aboriginal Cammeraygal people called the peninsula home for thousands of years. A large rock engraving of a whale survives at the entrance to the Coal Loader site, and there is further evidence of the indigenous community carved into rocks on the bush walks.

The Coal Loader Waverton

The Coal Loader opened in the early 1920s to serve as a transfer depot for coal to be moved from bulk carriers to smaller coal-fired vessels or to be distributed by road. The elevated platform which is now a place for the community to gather as well as the face of North Sydney’s sustainability plan, once housed a large coal stockpile.

Underneath the platform are a series of tunnels through which coal was transported into coal ‘skips’. The site was decommissioned in the early 1990s. After being dedicated a public open space in 1997, North Sydney Council took over management of the site in 2003, working with a grant from the Australian and NSW Governments to transform the space into the Coal Loader Centre for Sustainability.

The site operated for over 70 years before being decommissioned. The Coal Loader Centre for Sustainability was opened in July 2011, and the Coal Loader platform opened in March 2018.

Today, the Coal Loader is a place for the community to gather and relax, dine, and learn about sustainable living practices.

Genia McCaffery Centre

The Genia McCaffery Centre, located inside the historic sandstone building onsite, is a place to visit and be inspired by sustainable concepts. Visitors can get information on how to “green up” their lives, participate in book swaps, and drop off batteries, compact fluorescent lightbulbs, toner cartridges, corks, soft plastics or mobile phones and their accessories for recycling.

The Coal Loader Waverton

Coal Loader Platform

The platform is one of Sydney’s largest publicly accessible green roof spaces. At one hectare in size (or seven Olympic swimming pools next to each other), the concrete and sandstone platform is a multipurpose recreational space displaying sustainable technology and community gardens.

Coal Loader Cottage Community Garden

Dotted around the Genia McCaffery Centre, cafe and platform are an array of community gardens and the native bush nursery. In total there are 40 raised garden beds, aquaponics facilities, fruit trees and herb planters. Visitors are welcome to admire the gardens and have a bit of a sniff at the produce as it grows – but must be a member of the community gardens to access any produce.

Aboriginal Bush Foods Garden

The ‘bush foods’ garden has a variety of edible and otherwise useful native plants from the local area.

Chook Run

While the chickens were on holiday when we visited, they usually live at the Coal Loader and visitors can learn how to keep their own chooks at home.

Coal Loader Cafe

The Coal Loader Cafe is currently open Wednesday to Sunday serving delicious light breakfast and brunch meals. Book a table or be prepared for a bit of a wait. The cafe has a kids’ menu and options for vegetarians.

Coal Loading Tunnels

Take the elevator or stairs down to the Coal Loader tunnels and explore tunnel 1, features the original coal feeder and cart, and tunnel 2, which takes visitors 160m through the dark to bushland of Balls Head.

The Coal Loader Waverton The Coal Loader Waverton The Coal Loader Waverton The Coal Loader Waverton

Foreshore Park and Walks

Past the tunnels is the foreshore park with plenty of bush walks. You can also access the park by road if you won’t wish to go through the tunnel. The 2.8 hectare park features a native havens demonstration garden (habitat for fauna), wetlands, picnic areas, and foreshore walk. Along the walk are interpretive signs which talk about the site’s heritage and sustainable transformation. The walk to Balls Head Reserve traverses through the largest bushland remnant in North Sydney.

Digital Kids Trail

While our kid was easily entertained during our visit with scooting, exploring and bushwalking, families can also check out the free digital kids trail, which helps kids discover the Coal Loader’s history, sustainability features, native planting, food gardens, bats, chickens and more. The Paper Mill Food: Dining Precincts in Liverpool, Sydney

The Paper Mill Food: Dining Precincts in Liverpool, Sydney

Take your pick of delicious eating establishments in the Paper Mill Food precinct, located on the banks of the Georges River in South-West Sydney.

The Paper Mill was, as its name implies, originally used as a paper mill during the late 1800s, and at the time was Australia’s largest paper mill. It was alter used as a woollen mill until 1975, and has been brought back to life as a dining precinct.

Inside the Paper Mill are four restaurants, and plenty of seating.

Shepherd’s Lane

This cafe, bakery and dessert bar is the place to head for breakfast, brunch and lunch, plus serves up sweet treats later on in the day.

Shepherd’s Lane Has a wide range of pastries on offer, with tempting croissants, muffins, doughnuts and cakes baked on site daily. They also have artisan gelato and desserts available all day.

The signature breakfast and brunch dishes at Shepherd’s Lane include waffles (there is a large waffle and pancake menu), eggs and wood-fired manoush. We dined at Shepherd’s Lane and could not fault the excellent food and coffee.

Firepit

The Paper Mill’s a la carte dining option is perfect for a special family gathering. Firepit serves meat and fresh market seafood chargrilled or cooked in a wood-fire oven. The Firepit is open daily for lunch and dinner.

Georgie’s

Enjoy wood-fired pizza, Neapolitan-style, in a casual setting at this pizzeria and bar. Georgie’s is located near the kids’ indoor play area, making it the perfect family option. Open daily for lunch and dinner.

Charcoal Joe’s

Try Lebanese charcoal chicken cooked on a custom charcoal grill, with a spread of colourful and flavourful mezze, salads, pickles, dips and chips.

Kids’ Play Area

There is a cute little play area for kids that includes little tables, games and cubbies.

The Paper Mill is located between Liverpool and Casula, right near the Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre and Casula Parklands Adventure Playground. They offer a valet parking service, however we found parking on the street nearby. You can also catch the train to Casula or Liverpool and take the 10 minute walk there.

The Paper Mill Food is open between 7am – 11pm weekdays, and 7:30am-11pm on weekends. Food is available all day, the kitchens close at 10:30 every night.

Sydney Cafe Review: Sideways Deli Cafe, Dulwich Hill

Sideways Deli Cafe, Sydney Cafe Reviews

Sideways Deli Cafe, Dulwich Hill

Sideways Deli Cafe is a casual cafe in Sydney’s inner west serving classic brunch dishes in a family-friendly setting.

Sideways Deli Cafe, Dulwich Hill

The cafe offers indoor and outdoor seating and our favourite thing in the world – an all-day breakfast menu.

Sideways Cafe Deli is a bustling neighbourhood favourite for a very good reason. The food is impeccable and the staff are accommodating. Add to that the very family-friendly atmosphere and you have yourself a perpetually busy cafe that’s worth the wait.

Sideways Deli Cafe, Dulwich Hill

The cafe is extremely family-friendly and wins our vote for one of our fave kid-friendly cafes in Sydney with a combination of their excellent kids’ menu, toy corner, colouring sheets and close proximity to Johnson Park.

Sideways Deli Cafe, Dulwich Hill

I can’t say how much I loved to see this printed on the menu: “Please feel free to make variations or create your own. We can cater to your little ones’ dietary requirements”.
Sideways Deli Cafe, Dulwich Hill

I also loved how accommodating the cafe is regarding its menus, with all-day breakfast from 7am-4pm(ish) and the lunch menu from 12pm (ish). It’s the “ish” that matters. We’ve been to several cafes in the past that refuse to serve a dish if it’s ordered right on the crossover time, so this kind of easy-going attitude has won us as future regulars.
Sideways Deli Cafe, Dulwich Hill

We ordered: Corn Fritters (with sautéed spinach, haloumi and tomato relish, $18, additional egg, $3), Sirloin Steak Sandwich (with lettuce, tomato, beetroot relish and garlic aioli, $17.50), Kids’ Omelette (with cheese, minus the ham and toast solders, $8.50), Big Girlcino, $2.
Sideways Deli Cafe, Dulwich Hill Sideways Deli Cafe, Dulwich Hill Sideways Deli Cafe, Dulwich Hill

We can’t say enough about how much we loved everything about this little neighbourhood cafe. Worth the drive if you’re not a local.

Frankie’s Food Factory at Flower Power Milperra Sydney

Frankie's Food Factory Flower Power Milperra Sydney

Enjoy modern classics in the heart of a leafy nursery at Frankie’s Food Factory, inside Flower Power Milperra.

Frankie's Food Factory Flower Power Milperra Sydney

The massive new Flower Power sure packs a punch with its excellent cafe, Frankie’s Food Factory, making it a destination for dining as well as shopping for plants.

Frankie's Food Factory Flower Power Milperra Sydney

Frankie’s Food Factory has a breakfast and lunch menu served inside large indoor and outdoor dining areas with a lovely leafy nursery view. The outdoor dining area leads into the fully fenced playground.

Frankie's Food Factory Flower Power Milperra Sydney

We thought the menu was a bit on the pricey side, however couldn’t fault the staff, ambience, decor or food.

The food is a bit American in style – the burgers we ordered were extremely “American”, with soft buns and thin French fries sprinkled with gentle spices.

Frankie's Food Factory Flower Power Milperra Sydney

Frankie’s Cheeseburger (single $21 | double $27 | triple $32, wagyu beef burger with melted cheese, pickles, onion, tomato sauce & American mustard, served with fries, add bacon +4).

Frankie's Food Factory Flower Power Milperra Sydney

There is an excellent, reasonably priced kids’ menu from which we ordered the Scrambled Eggs ($8, served with toast & tomato sauce).

Frankie's Food Factory Flower Power Milperra Sydney

My Halloumi Quinoa Salad ($21, halloumi, quinoa, Spanish onion, roasted cauliflower, spinach, avocado, brown rice & sunflower seeds) was excellent and I would absolutely order it again.

Frankie's Food Factory Flower Power Milperra Sydney

The Nutella Hot Chocolate ($6, served with whipped cream & marshmallows) was an absolute winner, too.

Frankie's Food Factory Flower Power Milperra Sydney

Kids will love drawing on the paper covering the tables while they wait for their meals to arrive.

Frankie's Food Factory Flower Power Milperra Sydney

There is a small kids’ games area at the front of the cafe that mostly requires money to operate.

Frankie's Food Factory Flower Power Milperra Sydney

We visited during the school holidays and it was packed. According to staff school holidays and weekends are always busy. We arrived at 11:30am and waited about 30 mins for a table.

Sydney Cafes Reviews: The Innocent Kitchen

The Innocent Kitchen Sydney Australia

The Innocent Kitchen

The Innocent Kitchen is a sweet and simple cafe run by two sisters in Sydney’s inner west.

The Innocent Kitchen, Sydney Australia

The menu is basic and located on a blackboard. Choose from items like a bacon and egg roll and toasted sandwiches. Kids can order fairy bread, raisin toast, vegemite or peanut butter sandwiches and toasties. The babyccinos are free!

I suggest trying a fancy milkshake and some of their delicious baked foods. The cakes look amazing.

The Innocent Kitchen is also home of Marshmallow Club and is a 2 minute walk from Sydenham Station.

The cafe is bright and cheerful and has drawing materials for kids. There is a bathroom around the side of the building but no changing area.
