Sydney Cafes Reviews: The Tiny Giant

The Tiny Giant, Sydney, Australia

The Tiny Giant

This tiny little cafe in Sydney’s inner west is a hot spot for pretty and tasty dishes.

The Tiny Giant, Sydney, Australia

Expect creative and delicious breakfasts including their famous brioche toast which is completely clouded in bright-pink fairy floss, berries and cinnamon ricotta.

The Tiny Giant, Sydney, Australia

Pancakes and waffles also come with fairy floss, and in an excellent decision, the kids also get a fancy (but not too fancy!) version of the waffles.

The Tiny Giant, Sydney, Australia

The Tiny Giant also features all-day breakfast, as well as a lunch menu, free WIFI, Campos Coffee and pastries.

Fika by Cuppa Flower: Sydney’s Prettiest Cafes

Fika by Cuppa Flower, Sydney Cafes, Australia

Fika by Cuppa Flower

Fika by Cuppa Flower is a cafe and florist located at Duo Central Park, Chippendale. Go for the pretty flowers and stay for the delicious food.

Fika by Cuppa Flower, Sydney Cafes, Australia

It’s no secret I love pretty cafes and Fika is extremely pretty, just like its sister cafe Cuppa Flower. “Fika” is a Swedish word meaning “state of mind”. The concept is a lifestyle choice: To “fika” is to make time to take a break and enjoy the moment; by yourself or with friends.

Fika by Cuppa Flower, Sydney Cafes, Australia

Fika by Cuppa Flower is the perfect place to enjoy a “fika”. It’s a quiet little spot with pretty flowers and details, with absolutely delicious food that we will be going back for again.

The all-day breakfast choices were a massive hit with us, and we tried the Red Velvet Latte $5, Hot Choco $4.70, Smashed Avocado Open Sandwich With Grilled Haloumi Cheese $16.80, Acai Bowl $13.80, Japanese Souffle Pancakes $20.80 and Matcha Swiss Roll.

Fika by Cuppa Flower, Sydney Cafes, Australia

The soufflé pancakes are a work of art and take a bit longer to cook, so be prepared for a short wait if you order them. They were the hit dish of our lunch. Fat and fluffy and divine they just melted in our mouths. Eat them fast before they deflate!
Fika by Cuppa Flower, Sydney Cafes, Australia

I have a thing for red velvet lattes which are effectively a white hot chocolate. Sweet and pretty I want to drink them all day.

Fika by Cuppa Flower, Sydney Cafes, Australia
My open sandwich was more like a smashed avocado dish with poached egg and I thought it was not just perfectly cooked and pretty as anything, but also a generous size for the price.
Fika by Cuppa Flower, Sydney Cafes, Australia

Hubby ordered the acai bowl and declared it not just healthy but tasty, and then ate the rest of the pancakes, so I guess that was a good mix to go with.

Fika by Cuppa Flower, Sydney Cafes, Australia

Cheese’s hot chocolate came with a little bowl of mini marshmallows which was a nice touch.

Fika by Cuppa Flower, Sydney Cafes, Australia

We all tried the matcha Swiss roll because Cheese is going through a matcha phase. The cakes are all super fresh and pretty and It’s a great spot to try a pastry that’s a bit different to what you might usually find at cafes.
Fika by Cuppa Flower, Sydney Cafes, Australia

Parking in the area is extremely painful. There is no car park in the area – the closest ones are a paid station across Broadway, but you can also park in the Broadway Shopping Centre for two hours for free and walk up. We found a spot on a side street after much circling but it was only one hour so we had to eat fast.

If you’re visiting with kids: the cafe is easy to access with a stroller as it’s flat and on the ground level right off the sidewalk. There are highchairs available. No kids’ menu but there are eggs any way on the menu.

Cuppa Flower Waterloo: Sydney’s Prettiest Cafes

Cuppa Flower: Sydney's Prettiest Cafes

Cuppa Flower: Sydney’s Prettiest Cafes

Cuppa Flower is a delightful spot in the Sydney suburb of Waterloo that is a combination of cafe and florist. Good coffee, great food and fresh flowers are on offer.

Cuppa Flower: Sydney's Prettiest Cafes

The cafe is extremely popular due to their highly Instagrammable food and drinks, including vibrant cakes, smoothies and pancakes.

Cuppa Flower: Sydney's Prettiest Cafes

There is an all day breakfast menu plus a dedicated lunch menu. Popular choices include the red velvet, taro, and matcha green lattes, flower teas, fizzy lemonade drinks, acai bowls, pancakes, pastries, sandwiches and wraps.

Cuppa Flower: Sydney's Prettiest Cafes

Everything is beautifully presented, and thankfully tastes as good as it looks.

Cuppa Flower is a busy cafe thanks to its Instagram fame. There is a wait of 20 minutes when we arrive on a Sunday lunch, with a large crowd outside the front steps.

Cuppa Flower: Sydney's Prettiest Cafes

The staff are friendly and extremely efficient. No time for small talk and chit chat, but everything is said and served with a genuine smile.

Tip: Order at the counter, don’t wait for a server to come to your table!

We ordered the Kids Fish and Chips ($12.50), Ricotta Pancake (served with seasonal fruit, cuppaflower homemade mixed berries jam, ricotta cheese, honeycomb, mascarpone cheese and maple syrup, $20.80), Eggs on Toast Your Way (2 free range eggs, poached scrambled or fried, and a choice of toast, $9.50) with a side of Hash Brown ($4) and the Grilled Atlantic Salmon Steak (quinoa, edamame bean, cheery tomato, roasted pumpkins, asparagus, lemon wedges and mayonnaise, $25.80) and the lavender-flavoured Iced Fizzy ($7.50).

Cuppa Flower: Sydney's Prettiest Cafes

Usually when we order pretty dishes they don’t taste that great, so it was a wonderful surprise that the fancy pancakes tasted amazing. I would order them again in a heartbeat.

Cuppa Flower: Sydney's Prettiest Cafes

The kids’ fish and chips were a massive serve and was served nice and hot and fresh.

Cuppa Flower: Sydney's Prettiest Cafes

The scrambled eggs were creamy with a generous side of toast and tomato relish. Two hash browns were served as the side.

Cuppa Flower: Sydney's Prettiest Cafes

Hubby enjoyed his salmon and declared that he would be more than happy to eat here again as the food was delicious, not just pretty.

Cuppa Flower: Sydney's Prettiest Cafes

My fizzy drink was a mix of lemonade and lavender and I found it extremely refreshing.

The kids menu has plenty of options for junior diners, and there was a high chair available for babies.

Disabled access is through a ramp in the rear.

The cafe is even dog-friendly, with two tables outside where canines can enjoy brunch with their humans.

Social Hideout Waterloo: Sydney Cafe Reviews

Social Hideout Sydney Australia

Could this be Sydney’s most Instagrammable cafe? Social Hideout, located in Waterloo and Parramatta, delights the eyes and senses with its floral decor and beautifully designed dishes.

Social Hideout Sydney Australia

We visited the Waterloo cafe on a busy weekend around 11am. The cafe is a decent size with jam-packed indoor and outdoor seating. The indoor seating is where you want to be to take the pretty shots of yourself and your food (if that’s your thing!).

Social Hideout Sydney Australia

Outside the cafe is a set up with a pretty wall and bike in front of it for taking photos, as well as plenty of table where you can sit with your dog if you want to bring it along. There is even a pet menu for Fido.

Social Hideout Sydney Australia

Inside is where the real magic happens, however. The cafes is decked out with 17,000 flowers, neon lights and a gorgeous Audrey Hepburn wall.

Social Hideout Sydney Australia

The menu is small but designed to bring the “wow” factor. We ordered the Avocado Smash (poached eggs, cherry truss tomatoes, danish feta, dukkah, basil, sourdough, $16.90), the Mafia Hot Chocolate and Red Velvet Eggs Benedict.

Social Hideout Sydney Australia Social Hideout Sydney Australia Social Hideout Sydney Australia

If you order The Green Frenchy, staff come to your table with a blow torch and caramelize the banana at your table.

Social Hideout Sydney Australia

The colourful lattes are stunning, and the milkshake that comes in a bathtub is so cute.

My only negative about the cafe is how unfriendly it is for families. There’s no kids’ menu and while there are some ides they can order from on the breakfast menu, there is nothing on the lunch menu that kids can eat – the lunch menu is served from 11:30am onwards at Waterloo, while Parramatta has all-day breakfast.

We asked for a piece of toast and a side of avocado for Cheese fifteen minutes before the changeover of menu and had the staff come back to us a minute after changeover to say they couldn’t do it as it was now the lunch menu being served. When I explained that we had ordered it before the changeover time and there was nothing else my daughter could eat on the lunch menu, the staff member shrugged and said, “Yes it’s a real problem, we have nothing to serve kids, parents are always asking for a kids’ menu”, and that was it.

Since there is a dog menu, I’m not sure why there can’t be a kids’ menu too, particularly when there is a demand from their customers for it?

Two Sis & Co. Pyrmont: Sydney Cafe Reviews

Two Sis & Co. Pyrmont is a bright cafe on busy Harris Street serving up all-day breakfast, delicious lunch and colorful creations.

Two Sis Cafe Pyrmont, Sydney, Australia

We visited on a rainy Sunday and were surprised to see that even on a day when the rain was coming down like cats and dogs that the cafe was packed and there was a wait for tables.

The cafe is quite small, with not many tables and only three tiny outdoor tables. Dining here with little or multiple kids would be a challenge due to the size of the cafe which would not be able to accommodate strollers, plus there is only one high chair on offer to patrons.

The staff are extremely friendly and the service is fast and faultless. Considering how busy the cafe is and how small the kitchen, we were amazed with how fast the food arrived.

Two Sis Cafe Pyrmont, Sydney, Australia

We ordered their signature Mermaid pancakes (mermaid tail, whipped mascarpone, chocolate rocks, fresh raspberries, dragon fruit balls & peanut butter sauce, $23.50), Our Pick Smashed Avocado (medley tomatoes, Danish feta, dukkah with sourdough $15.50, plus poached egg $2.50), Free Range Eggs Any Style On Toast ($9.50) plus Side of Avocado ($3.50), Dukkah Eggs (smashed avocado, poached eggs, lemon dukkah, balsamic glaze $18, with roasted mushroom, crispy bacon or cured salmon, $18.90), Iced Rose Latte ($7.90).

The Mermaid Pancakes were quite a surprise. The actual pancakes themselves were not sweet in the slightest – Cheese thought they tasted like blueberry. The whipped mascarpone added a bit of sweetness but not overwhelmingly so, which was great because there was a lot of fairy floss and chocolate rocks to go with them. The only element we didn’t love was the peanut butter jelly / syrup. Even though I love peanut butter I wasn’t a fan. I would have preferred Nutella!

Two Sis Cafe Pyrmont, Sydney, Australia

The Ice Rose Latte was divine – not only theatrical and gorgeous, it tasted like the most amazing rose in a glass. Delicious and beautiful.

The food was not just well presented, it also tasted amazing. Really good serving sizes and beautifully presented.

A gem of a cafe in Pyrmont that is highly instagrammable but just as delicious.

Call Me Harris: Kid-Friendly Cafes Sydney

Call Me Harris, Pirrama Park and Playground, Pyrmont, Sydney, Australia

Located on at the end of Harris Street, Pyrmont, Call Me Harris offers beautiful water views along with fresh baked foods, all day brekkie and a great range of healthy meal choices.

Call Me Harris, Pyrmont Sydney

Sitting next to Pirrama Park and Pirrama Playground, it’s a great location for families to drop by to stave off the hangar attack or to get a much needed caffeine hit.

With coffee by Three Pence Roasters, Call Me Harris has a reputation for serving excellent coffee.

Call Me Harris, Pyrmont Sydney

The open air cafe is casual and fun. Choose a seat and order at the counter, and be sure to take a selfie in the blue throne chair when you do.

Call Me Harris, Pyrmont Sydney

We love the all-day brekkie menu, choosing the Smashed Avocado and Sumac Tomatoes ($18)  and Poke Salad, made with chicken or salmon ($18) as our meals of choice. There is a kids’ lunch menu but not breakfast, but a Eggs and Bacon on sourdough dish ($14) does the job, substituting the bacon for a hash brown. We also choose a Fruit Tingle smoothie, which is made from mixed berries and pineapple juice.

If baked goods are you thing then you will love the fluffy and fresh treats made daily on site. Cruffins are a regular feature, as are red velvet croissants. Today however, these cronuts are on offer and they look delicious.

Kids will love the child-sized tables and chairs that are scattered around. Adults will love the cheerful ambiance, excellent food and friendly staff.

Sydney Restaurants: Petty Cash Cafe, Marrickville, Australia

Petty Cash Cafe, Marrickville, Sydney, Australia

A cosy, retro cafe in Marrickville, Petty Cash has become a go-to for inventive vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free dishes in Sydney’s inner west.

Petty Cashe Cafe, Marrickville, Sydney

Petty Cash is a low-key spot, located directly across the road from the playground in leafy Enmore Park. As such it’s a great spot for families to dine in or pick up some take away and eat it in the park.

Petty Cashe Cafe, Marrickville, Sydney

We dined in and enjoyed the vintage, mismatched chairs, tables and crockery. The cafe has a slightly hippy feel to it and is a bit disorganised. This either adds to its charm or can be irritating, depending on how hangry you are.

Petty Cashe Cafe, Marrickville, Sydney

Petty Cash is a popular spot with locals, and the Sunday we visit it’s packed with diners. We nab a table inside but there’s a long line at the counter to order food. We’ve arrived at rush hour and the cafe is hectic.

Petty Cashe Cafe, Marrickville, Sydney

As a vegetarian I find cafes that cater to vegan and vegetarians hard to find. I loved the menu at Petty Cash as I could eat almost everything on the menu. I would have liked to have seen a kids’ menu as well.

Petty Cashe Cafe, Marrickville, Sydney

We chose the Big Brekkie with free range eggs on toast + avocado, tomato, hash brown, haloumi and house beans ($17.90), pumpkin & ricotta lasagne with burnt rosemary butter and salad ($17.90) and the free-range eggs on toast ($9.90).

When ordering at the counter we weren’t given a number or asked where we were sitting, so I was curious to see how our meals would find us. I was pleasantly surprised to see they they did find their way to us very quickly – the servers asked the person who took the order where to send the meals. What an incredible memory!

The playground across the road has some shade cloth over parts of the equipment, and a really cool space ship climbing structure. There are plenty of trees for shade and wide grassy spaces for running around. There are public restrooms at the nearby aquatic centre.

Sydney Restaurants: The Cove Dining Co, Abbotsford, Australia

The Cove Dining Co, Abbotsford, Sydney, Australia

A busy road in a residential area is not the location you’d expect to find the beautiful Cove Dining Co cafe. Located inside the community hall of what was once the Abbotsford Nestlé factory site, the building is heritage-listed and gives a lovely insight into a time gone by.

The Cove, Sydney

Walk inside to find a spacious dining room with long tables perfect for big groups or sharing and meeting new friends. There is also an outdoor verandah with alfresco seating and a lovely view of the lush gardens surrounding the building. The verandah is my pick for seating if you’re visiting with kids as the gardens provide the perfect place for kids to play.

The Cove, Sydney

The Cove Dining Co is a small, family run business. Almost everything is prepared onsite, including smoked goods, cheese and jam. Free range and organic ingredients are used where possible.

The Cove, Sydney

The menu has a lot of variety as well as some familiar favourites to fall back on. The dishes we order arrive pretty quickly for a busy day and are fairly busting with colour and flavour.

The Cove, Sydney

Honey Spice Granola with Almonds, Walnuts, Pumpkin Seeds, Coconut and Sultanas, served with Yoghurt and Preserved Fruit ($16).

The Cove, Sydney

Bubble & Squeak with Fried Egg, Speck, Cabbage, Peas, and Potato with Sourdough ($20).

The Cove, Sydney

Boiled Egg and Sourdough  off the kids’ menu ($6).

There is a decent-sized kids’ menu with enough options for picky eaters as well as those who will try something a bit more substantial. Boiled Egg and Sourdough ($6), Pancake with Maple Syrup ($6), Scrambled Egg and Bacon on Sourdough ($8), Toasted Cheese Sandwich on Brioche with Fries ($6), Crumbed Fish and Fries ($14), Crumbed Chicken and Fries ($14).

This is one incredible family-friendly cafe, as evidenced by how accessible it is for strollers and wheelchairs, and provide use of highchairs, baby change tables, toys and colouring in equipment. There is also free wifi!

XS Espresso: Milkshakes & Munchies in Wetherill Park, Sydney

XS Espresso: Crazy Milkshakes in Wetherill Park, Sydney via christineknight.me

A gem of a cafe in Sydney’s South-West, XS Espresso is situated in a busy outdoor shopping complex that looks more industrial than hip, but thankfully does have a lot of parking, unlike most inner city cafes.

XS Espresso: Crazy Milkshakes in Wetherill Park, Sydney via christineknight.me

We arrive at 12:30pm on a Tuesday and the cafe is quiet for the first half hour, when streams of people pop in, a mix of mums with little kids to a pair of 20 something men who both order the biggest milkshakes I’ve ever seen and polish them off completely.

XS Espresso: Crazy Milkshakes in Wetherill Park, Sydney via christineknight.me

We’re at the cafe for lunch, and order Free-Range Eggs on Sourdough Toast ($12), Avocado Crush (Avocado on sourdough with marinated feta and cherry tomatoes, $14) with extra poached eggs, $4, and the XS Stack (avocado, grilled halloumi, grilled tomato and poached eggs on sourdough, $17).

XS Espresso: Crazy Milkshakes in Wetherill Park, Sydney via christineknight.me XS Espresso: Crazy Milkshakes in Wetherill Park, Sydney via christineknight.me XS Espresso: Crazy Milkshakes in Wetherill Park, Sydney via christineknight.me

The food is cooked quickly, and arrives looking bright and perky with all those fresh ingredients piled on top. The stacks are a bit difficult to eat but are absolutely delicious.

XS Espresso: Crazy Milkshakes in Wetherill Park, Sydney via christineknight.me

The star of the meal, however, is the Monster Shake ($14), which is an Oreo shake topped with whipped cream, Oreos, Tim Tam and waffles in a tall glass.

XS Espresso: Crazy Milkshakes in Wetherill Park, Sydney via christineknight.me

The tall glass is important to note as the extra thick straws the staff give us to drink the shake with are not-so-tall – in fact, they don’t reach the bottom, leaving me in the unusual predicament of being unable to finish my shake (the horror!). I think they look fancy and very Instagrammable, for sure, but I would prefer the mason jar-style of glass that is easier to drink out of.

I really enjoy the creamy Oreo shake, but the toppings are too much, even for me, and it’s just too hard to get to the milkshake underneath with the narrow opening on the glass.

XS Espresso also serve more regular-looking milkshakes such as Nutella, and make kiddie-sized versions of the shakes on request. We ordered a kid-size Nutella shake to go and it was $4. Shakes all come with whipped cream on top (even the kids’ ones), so ask to skip the cream if it’s not your thing.

XS Espresso: Crazy Milkshakes in Wetherill Park, Sydney via christineknight.me

The cafe doesn’t have a bathroom inside – it’s a stroll of about 100m to the nearby Spotlight store which has the public restroom facilities next to it. It’s not far to walk but it is across a busy car park and, if you’re a toddler who needs to go, it can feel like it’s 10 times further than it actually is.

XS Espresso is the deliciously cool cafe the South-West suburbs badly needed. I love knowing it’s an excellent choice I can always fall back on when visiting that area.

Little Tastes Cafe: Kid-Friendly Restaurants St Peters Sydney

CLOSED ——————

Little tastes Cafe St Peters via christineknight.me

I knew we had stumbled on one of the best kid-friendly restaurants in Sydney when we were greeted with “the kids can draw on anything!” at the door by the very friendly staff at Little Tastes Cafe St Peters.

Little tastes Cafe St Peters via christineknight.me

Inside the cafe is the much-lauded play area. It’s a great size with loads of toys, and the walls and tabletops are covered in chalk paint, so kids are literally welcome to draw on the walls. I’ve heard that on Saturdays the cafe hangs paper on the walls for kids to paint on, but we arrived on a quiet Thursday during the school holidays just after a massive group, and had the playroom all to ourselves.

Little tastes Cafe St Peters via christineknight.me

Our friendly server let us know that babyccinos were on the house, officially making it the best deal in Sydney. They usually come with a marshmallow, but had had an unfortunate incident on the day we arrived that deprived our kids of their marshmallow. Not like they even noticed, however, they were having so much for playing that we had to beg them to sit down to eat. As an indication of how this compares to our usual cafe outings – if a babyccino arrives without a marshmallow, it’s usually met with a turned up lip and serious attitude.

Little tastes Cafe St Peters via christineknight.me

The cafe serves all-day breakfast and simple burgers, rolls and salads. They have a great kids’ menu with items like toast with jam, toasted sandwiches, the “Big Bubba Breakfast” with eggs, bacon sausages and toast, “Eggs with Toast Soldiers” and a fruit salad. All of the kids’ meals are under $10, with cheapest being $3 for the toast with jam, peanut butter or Vegemite.

Little tastes Cafe St Peters via christineknight.me

All of the meals at the cafe are reasonably priced, which is another massive plus in my book. We love eating out, and often with kids you end up needing to eat out even if you hadn’t planned to, so it can seriously add up to be very expensive, very fast. With prices like these, however, we will be dropping by all the time rather than just on special occasions. The meals for adults at Little Tastes range from $6 for an egg and bacon roll to $10 for the “Budget Brekkie” (two eggs, bacon or spinach, feta on thick toast) and $17 for the most expensive dish on the menu, the “Big Breakfast” (two eggs, bacon, sausage, mushrooms, haloumi, grilled tomato, toast).

Little tastes Cafe St Peters via christineknight.me

We ordered toast with jam and a grilled cheese sandwich for the kids, and a Spanish Omelette ($14, three egg omelette with red onion, tomato, chorizo and paprika served with thick cut toast) and Smashed Pumpkin ($16, two eggs your way on a bed of smashed pumpkin and feta with bacon and tomato served with thick cut toast). They happily swapped my bacon for spinach which I appreciated too.

Little tastes Cafe St Peters via christineknight.me

While we waited for the meals, the kids played and played and played. The kids’ meals arrived first, and they sat relatively peacefully at their table to eat. It was a bit of a wait for our meals, but with such a small cafe and only two staff members working there, it was understandable.

Little tastes Cafe St Peters via christineknight.me

I really enjoyed my smashed pumpkin dish. It really hit the spot for me, and I loved the thick cut toast, plus the delicious pumpkin and feta. All of the dishes were very generous in portion size, too.

Little tastes Cafe St Peters via christineknight.me Little tastes Cafe St Peters via christineknight.me

The bathroom is around the back of the cafe, and has a change table – hallelujah!

The cafe has both a fantastic and terrible location. It’s wonderful as it is right across the road from the massive Sydney Park, making it a great cafe to team up with a park visit. It’s also on a very busy road however, so keep a close eye on kids when you’re walking to the cafe. The cafe itself is quite small, so if you arrive on a busy day and need to sit outside, you’ll need to also keep a very close eye on little ones.
