Newington Armory Sydney Olympic Park

Newington Armory, Sydney Olympic Park

Visit the world heritage-listed Newington Armory in Sydney Olympic Park. The former Royal Australian Navy armament depot is now a place to enjoy cycling, art, picnics, wildlife and history.

The Newington Armory was built from 1897 by the Royal Australian Navy. It was designated as a world heritage site on 14 January 2011. What was once an industrial military site is now an arts precinct with a theatre, outdoor amphitheatre, artist studios and an exhibition space, as well as a place to cycle/scoot, picnic and play.

The Armory Gallery is housed in Building 18, one of the largest armament storehouses constructed prior to World War Two. The gallery is a flexible exhibition space which features the longest continuous gallery wall in Australia. While the gallery usually hosts large-scale exhibitions like ArtExpress as well as kids activities and other events, it is currently closed.

The Amory Gallery is accessed by walking through a tunnel along the railway tracks.

Heritage Railway Discovery Tour

While the tour was closed when we visited, the guided Heritage Railway Discovery Tour, “Riding the Rails”, usually runs every Sunday from 9.30am to 10.45am, on the historic railway that was once used to move missiles and torpedoes around the Armament Depot. The tour usually runs every Sunday 11am to 1pm, every half hour. If you have kids, be aware that the tour is suitable for kids aged 10+. There is a tour during the school holidays suitable for younger children. On the first Sunday of every month is the Heritage Railway Discovery Tour.

BirdLife Discovery Centre

Also sadly closed at the moment is the BirdLife Discovery Centre, a great place to learn about birds living in the area. Watch the centre’s resident pair of White-bellied Sea-Eagles on their nest using EagleCAM or take a free guided bird walk around the Newington Armory (they run on the last Sunday of the month at 10am for one hour).

Armory Wharf Cafe: Waterfront & Family-Friendly Cafe in Sydney

Armory Wharf Cafe

Armory Wharf Café

The Armory Wharf Café in Sydney Olympic Park is a family-friendly, waterfront cafe with a casual vibe and al fresco seating.

Armory Wharf Cafe

Located on the edge of the Parramatta River in the Newington Nature Reserve, the Armory Wharf Café is a licensed venue that has stunning 270-degree water views of mangroves and the industrial Armory wharf.

Armory Wharf Cafe

The Armory Wharf Café has a mix of shaded outdoor and indoor seating, and a menu that offers fresh, seasonal cuisine.

Armory Wharf Cafe

There are daily specials and a decent amount of options for kids.

Armory Wharf Cafe Armory Wharf Cafe

The cafe is an extremely popular spot for families in particular, with its close proximity to Blaxland Riverside Playground. There is a section of the playground close enough for older kids to enjoy while their parents are waiting for meals to arrive in the cafe.

Armory Wharf Cafe

Our group ordered the Beer-battered Fish n Chips (served with mushy peas and tartar sauce, $24), Grilled Salmon (served with a spinach, nut and grain salad and beetroot hummus, $28), Berry Good Smoothie (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries and skim milk, $8), Loaded Focaccia (housemate focaccia topped with scrambled eggs, haloumi, spinach, tomato relish and avocado, $20), Kids’ Mini Pizza Pocket (cheese and tomato pizza pocket, $12).

Armory Wharf Cafe Armory Wharf Cafe Armory Wharf Cafe Armory Wharf Cafe

The fish and chips, salmon and loaded focaccia meals were all excellent. Great sized services, bright, fresh produce and excellently cooked. All meals arrived quickly and were very well made.

The only dish that was a let down was the pizza pockets. They were a bit sweet and weird tasting, and not a hit with any of us unfortunately.

I would highly advise making reservations to secure a spot. Parking is available nearby however is limited and is also used for the playground, so arrive early enough to wait for a spot to become available if you are visiting on a weekend.

Afterwards, take kids to Blaxland Riverside Playground or to explore the Newington Armory.

A hidden gem inside the sprawling Sydney Olympic Park, Wentworth Common is a quiet, grassy park with wetlands, a playground and picnic facilities.

Wentworth Common is easy to find, with a car park directly outside, off the main road (Marjorie Jackson Pkwy). It’s often overlooked, making it a lovely spot for those seeking solitude.

There are some lovely wooden beams linking the two small play areas though the wilderness as well as low circular stepping stones dotted throughout the bush – great for balance as well as imaginative play.

The Ring Walk is accessed by an elevated walkway in two spots – the easiest is at the Brickpit Ring Walk carpark.

Brickpit Sydney Olympic Park

A circular walkway 550m in circumference and raised 18.5 metres above the sandstone floor of the Brickpit, the Ring Walk  allows visitors to experience what was once the State Brickworks and is now a habitat for the endangered Green and Golden Bell frog and other native Australian animals.

Explore Bicentennial Park, Sydney Olympic Park

Bicentennial Park, Sydney Olympic Park

Walk, cycle or run through 40 hectares of parklands featuring wetlands, meadows, playgrounds and picnic areas at Bicentennial Park.

Bicentennial Park is located inside Sydney Olympic Park, a 40-hectare park combining the Badu Mangroves wetlands with beautifully landscaped parklands with gentle hills, meadows and a large lake.

We have been visiting the park for years, and love how much space there is to explore inside the park, with monuments, boardwalks, wildlife and playgrounds to occupy us.

Tips for visiting Bicentennial Park

BYO bike and cycle the many smooth trails throughout the park.

Hire a bike if you don’t own your own from the bike hire next to WatervieW.

Climb to the top of the Treillage Tower for beautiful views of the wetlands, Homebush Bay and the city in the distance.

Visit in autumn for gorgeous fall colours.

Parking on weekends is tricky so arrive early. It is, however free but not all-day.

Bring a picnic or BBQ lunch and blanket to sit on the grass and enjoy the serenity.

There is a cafe at WatervieW serving coffee, cakes, breakfast and other light meals.

Take the boardwalk through the mangroves.

Dogs are welcome! They must be on-leash at all times except for the one designated off-leash area near P5a car park off Hill Road.

Take the kids to one of the two playgrounds. The playground next to WatervieW features a Liberty Swing.

Cathy Freeman Park + Olympic Cauldron, Olympic Park, Homebush

Cathy Freeman Park & Olympic Cauldron, Sydney Olympic Park

Have you ever wondered where the famous caldron from the 2000 Sydney Olympics ended up once the games were over? The answer is it didn’t go very far at all.

After the magical opening and closing ceremonies (who can forget Cathy Freeman lighting the cauldron and it rising through the air simultaneously dripping with fire and water?) the cauldron was taken down and moved just a few hundred metres to its permanent home – in the appropriately named Cathy Freeman Park.

Cathy Freeman Park & Olympic Cauldron, Sydney Olympic Park

Located very conveniently next to the Allphones Arena, Cathy Freeman Park has 2 playgrounds – one for young kids and one for older – huge shady trees and easy access to bathrooms and cafes.

Cathy Freeman Park & Olympic Cauldron, Sydney Olympic Park

Cathy Freeman Park & Olympic Cauldron, Sydney Olympic Park

Cathy Freeman Park & Olympic Cauldron, Sydney Olympic Park

We often end up in the park when attending a show at the Allphones Arena – it’s great to burn off energy after a long drive before needing to sit still for a long time while watching a show.

The cauldron is a popular feature for tourists and kids, who particularly love running underneath it in the puddles, and trying to judge when the fountain is about to turn on. There’s always one kid who times it poorly and gets absolutely soaked. Bring extra clothes in case this is your kid!
