Tella Balls Dessert Bar: Sydney’s Best Dessert Spots

Tella Balls Dessert Bar: Sydney's Best Sweet Spots via christineknight.me

If you have a sweet tooth like me, then you might be similarly always on the hunt for the best dessert in Sydney.

Tella Balls Dessert Bar: Sydney's Best Sweet Spots via christineknight.me

I’ve been loving the Tella Ball shakes at Foodcraft Espresso & Bakery in Erskineville pretty hard since the Nutella-injected donuts perched on top of Nutella-flavoured milkshakes almost broke Instagram last year, so it was with great excitement that I heard the original creators of this delicious extravagance, Aki Daikos and Simon Kappatos, were opening a Tella Balls Dessert Bar in Dulwich Hill.

The Instagram pictures for the cafe have been killing me – particularly this gelato donut on a stick, which sells for $7. Sadly when I visited they didn’t have any for sale, but I guess that means there is a reason to go back next time?

Tella Balls Dessert Bar: Sydney's Best Sweet Spots via christineknight.me

There are no savoury dishes on the menu at the dessert bar – just sugar, sugar and more sugar. It is 100% a pure dessert bar.

Tella Balls Dessert Bar: Sydney's Best Sweet Spots via christineknight.me

As well as their signature Tell Balls and milkshakes, the dessert bar serves house-made gelato, Nutella layered lasagne, waffles, pancakes, and amazing sweets that feature Nutella heavily as a signature ingredient.

Tella Balls Dessert Bar: Sydney's Best Sweet Spots via christineknight.me

I visited on a week day before school let out to ensure we had a quiet dining experience. Even at midday on a Friday it was pretty busy, so I can imagine the cafe is a bit of a zoo on weekends.

Tella Balls Dessert Bar: Sydney's Best Sweet Spots via christineknight.me

My dining companion Jayne from Girl Tweets World and I ordered a few dishes to share between us. The Vanilla Tella Ball Shake with a Boston Custard Tella Ball on top ($10), the Ferraro Bowl (a smooth Ferraro Rocher mousse in a chocolate bowl served with vanilla bean gelato, $13), and the Ricotta and Blueberry Pancakes (2 stack buttermilk ricotta & blueberry pancakes topped with Canadian maple syrup and mascarpone, $16).

Tella Balls Dessert Bar: Sydney's Best Sweet Spots via christineknight.me

The vanilla shake was excellent, and the donut on top fluffy with a very tart custard inside. We were a bit regretful not to have ordered the Nutella one seeing as it’s the signature shake, but sometimes it’s good to brand out and try new things, right?

Tella Balls Dessert Bar: Sydney's Best Sweet Spots via christineknight.me

The Ferraro Bowl looked incredibly sweet, but surprisingly wasn’t. I really appreciated this, as even though I love all things chocolate, I can’t handle feeling ill after injecting myself full of dessert these days. I really particularly enjoyed the crisp chocolate shell with nut shards on it, and its pairing with the refreshing vanilla bean gelato.

Tella Balls Dessert Bar: Sydney's Best Sweet Spots via christineknight.me

I deliberately ordered the pancakes that did not have Nutella as I thought I couldn’t handle more chocolate after the Ferraro Bowl, and it was a good move when they were all on the table in front of us, with our dining companions looking on in … horror? awe? Who can tell!

The pancakes were excellent. Not super-fluffy, but a good size, and nicely soaked with maple syrup. I found the double serve of cheese a bit too much for me – I didn’t love the ricotta with this dish, and could have just done very nicely with the mascarpone and blueberries. I love fruit with my pancakes, so the huge amount of blueberries it was served with did me very nicely.

Tella Balls Dessert Bar: Sydney's Best Sweet Spots via christineknight.me

I would love to go back on another day to try more dishes from the menu. Tell me if you go and what you try.

The Gingerbread House: Kid-Friendly Cafes, Katoomba, Blue Mountains

Gingerbread House: #KidFriendly Cafes #Katoomba #BlueMountains #Sydney via christineknight.me

On our recent Blue Mountains drive we stopped off at The Gingerbread House for afternoon tea after several recommendations from friends. It’s the sweetest cafe, housed in a beautifully restored 100-year-old church. As you can guess from the name, The Gingerbread House is all about sweet things – milkshakes, Serendipity ice-cream, cakes, cookies & gingerbread. They do have light savoury food, by the way, but it’s the sweet things they’re well known for.

Gingerbread House: #KidFriendly Cafes #Katoomba #BlueMountains #Sydney via christineknight.me

The Gingerbread House is owned by the creators of Josophan’s Fine Chocolates, so they obviously know a thing or two about the sweet things people go crazy for.

Inside the church is an adorably styled gingerbread house containing a sweet shop filled with lollies, and a mix of small and large communal tables. You can also sit outside and soak up the sun while the kids play in the gingerbread cubby house.

On our visit, we enjoyed a chocolate gingerbread man, a vanilla malt milkshake, a slice of chocolate cake with salted caramel frosting, an affogato with Serendipity caramel ice cream, and a scoop of Serendipity ‘Death by Chocolate’ ice-cream (which has just been awarded Champion Premium Ice-cream at the Sydney Royal Cheese & Dairy show).

The cake was mine, and I found it to be just the right mix of dense, moist chocolate cake, with thick caramel frosting for my taste. I loved the milkshake (nice and malty), as did Cheese, who stole mine off me. Alec enjoyed his affogato (said the ice cream was great) and Cheese devoured her ice cream (as the official “eat the rest of the cone when the kid is done” person, I can confirm that the chocolate ice cream was really, really good, too!).

Gelato Messina Gelato Appreciation Class

Gelato Messina: #Gelato Appreciation Class via christineknight.me #icecream #dessert

So if you know me, you know I’m obsessed with ice cream. In Australia, that means gelato. And the best gelato IMHO comes from Gelato Messina, a small business run by bunch of guys from Adelaide, creating authentic gelato and sorbet with a really fun twist.

For Valentine’s Day this year I booked Alec and I into one of Gelato Messina’s Gelato Appreciation Classes, run out of their new factory in Rosebery. I didn’t know what to expect, and just really hoped that I would be able to gorge myself on gelato.

Gelato Messina: #Gelato Appreciation Class via christineknight.me #icecream #dessert

After meeting Diego, Messina’s social media manager, at the Gelato Messina Darlinghurst store early in the morning, we then took a short bus ride to the new factory.

Gelato Messina: #Gelato Appreciation Class via christineknight.me #icecream #dessert

At the factory we were met by Alex, Messina’s charismatic operations manager, who ran the appreciation class as well as entertaining us with his fun stories of gelato wins and woes (note to everyone: Fosters-flavoured gelato is NOT a good idea).

Gelato Messina: #Gelato Appreciation Class via christineknight.me #icecream #dessert

Gelato Messina: #Gelato Appreciation Class via christineknight.me #icecream #dessert

The class took place in a room adjacent to where the gelato magic happens. Through glass walls we could see the machines that cranked out the gelato and sorbets, and the pastry chefs hard at work making, in this case, our innovative (and delicious) five-course dessert degustation. NOTE: The five course degustation will feature in a follow up blog post.

Gelato Messina: #Gelato Appreciation Class via christineknight.me #icecream #dessert Gelato Messina: #Gelato Appreciation Class via christineknight.me #icecream #dessert Gelato Messina: #Gelato Appreciation Class via christineknight.me #icecream #dessert

Between the five courses, Alex, who’s been making gelato for 16 years, gave us a fascinating lesson on how to make a basic gelato and sorbet from scratch, and let us taste the products before and after freezing. A great deal of the lesson was spent talking about the produce, which is one major area that sets Messina apart from a lot of other ice cream and gelato stores. The Messina team take their gelato very seriously (even though if, judging from Alex, they’re pretty irreverent, fun guys), and every single ingredient is sourced from the best possible place to ensure the highest quality of gelato and sorbet possible.

Gelato Messina: #Gelato Appreciation Class via christineknight.me #icecream #dessert

If you’ve ever eaten a scoop of Messina’s gelato, you’ll know what I’m talking about. The flavours are like an explosion in the mouth of pure deliciousness – and it all comes back to using the best possible ingredients.

For example, for their pistachio gelato, Messina imports pistachios from Sicily at $500 a pail. Their frozen berries are shipped in from South America (where they are washed and snap frozen so when defrosted are fresher than using actual fresh berries). The lady finger biscuits used in the tiramisu gelato are shipped from Italy. Their hazelnuts are also from Italy – sourced from from Nutella company. When they can’t source their premium ingredients they take the flavour off the menu.

Another reason the Messina creations taste so amazing is that every single batch is created from scratch, rather than them using a generic base and just adding a different flavour. This accounts for each ingredient in the recipe having it’s own fat, protein and sugar content that needs to be accounted for.

Gelato Messina: #Gelato Appreciation Class via christineknight.me #icecream #dessert

During the sorbet-making, we learned about the differences between gelato and ice cream. Namely that gelato has less air in it, making it more dense to eat and letting the flavour linger on the palette longer. Another difference is the fat content: Ice cream is 35% fat while gelato has 10-15% fat content.

Gelato Messina: #Gelato Appreciation Class via christineknight.me #icecream #dessert

After the gelato and sorbet demonstrations, French pastry chef Flo came out to show us how to make the famous Messina Dr Evil Mushroom Cake. We hear that in the old factory, it was so small that pastry chefs worked around the clock in 24 hours shifts, 7 days a week, to produce everything needed. Yikes. With more space in the new facility, the pastry chefs are sure to be greatful that they now have something resembling normal hours.

Gelato Messina: #Gelato Appreciation Class via christineknight.me #icecream #dessert

The pastry chefs are crucial to Messina, as they make all of the delicious bit and pieces you find in their gelato, such as brownies and cheesecake. These ingredients are all made from scratch in the factory, and are specially formulated to not freeze when mixed with gelato so when you bite into your scoop their not frozen hard, they’re gooey and chewy.

Gelato Messina: #Gelato Appreciation Class via christineknight.me #icecream #dessert

The mushroom cake was Messina’s first gelato cake, and was name after Austin Powers – just one of their creations named after pop culture. The cakes are produced in batches of 100 by hand, and then shipped to stores or customers. They use a special kind of gelato in the cakes that stays frozen longer, enabling the cakes to be glazed as well as transported without melting.

Gelato Messina: #Gelato Appreciation Class via christineknight.me #icecream #dessert

Gelato Messina: #Gelato Appreciation Class via christineknight.me #icecream #dessert

After the mushroom cake was completed, it was sliced up for us to eat.

Gelato Messina: #Gelato Appreciation Class via christineknight.me #icecream #dessert

When there was no more gelato to be had, we were bused back to the Darlinghurst store to try every flavour they make before the store opened to the public.

We were sent home with a litre of our choice of gelato as well as the Gelato Messina Cookbook (and a bit of a tummy ache for some of us who ate way too much gelato!).

Before I was introduced to the Big Gay Ice Cream, my experience with soft serve was limited to McDonald’s. I’ve never liked it, and was hesitant to try what I’ve always viewed to be ice cream’s second-rate cousin. I’m happy to admit I was wrong when it comes to Big Gay.

Owners have created a cult following in New York City for a very good reason. Their soft-serve is developed in collaboration with Ronnybrook Farm Dairy and includes fun and creative ice creams like the Salty Pimp (my personal favourite, which includes injections of caramel and sprinklings of salt, and then dipped in chocolate).

Big Gay in the West Village is my favorite outpost to visit. They have a large seating area and we’ve always found a table, even on their busiest days. The staff are friendly, the atmosphere quirky and fun, and the ice creams are just amazing. What more could you ask for?

Mother's Day Traditions to Inspire You

Rejoice! It is almost Mother’s Day! The Brunch With My Baby team hopes that you’ll be spoiled rotten by your family, and get to enjoy some quality time with your loved ones.

Haven’t decided on where to go yet? We asked some of our favorite blogger friends for their Mother’s Day plans to give you some last-minute ideas.

#mothersday #traditions via brunchwithmybaby.com

Kristin Strange of My Strange Family
This year I will be celebrating my 4th Mothers Day.  Every year, my Mother’s Day is divided between “me” time and “family” time. We always have a nice brunch at The Harrison restaurant in Tribeca (which we originally picked because it is my son’s name). After brunch we make our way tonearby Washington Market Park for some running-out-the-crazies and slide time. During nap-time on Mother’s Day, I usually sneak out of the house and have a nice spa afternoon at the Langham Place Spa in Midtown. It is a perfect mix of activities for a perfect day of celebrating me as a mom. (The photo is from last year at Washington Market Park, when Kristin was 8+ months pregnant!)

Allison Cooper of Project Motherhood

For our family, Mother’s Day (and Father’s Day!) have become days that we always spend together as a family, but the rule is that my husband and son are in charge of planning something they know I will enjoy (we do the same for Father’s Day, but with me as the planner). Last year, we spent a wonderfully sunny day at Prospect Park Zoo, which we love because it’s so intimate and friendly. We also do small gifts, which is always fun to look forward to. As my son gets older, many of the gifts become homemade treasures that I value more than anything!
An Interview with #Brianne Manz from #strollerinthecity - brunchwithmybaby.com

Brianne Manz of Stroller In The City
My absolutely favorite thing to do in NYC on Mothers Day is to go to a wonderful brunch with my family! It’s so important to me to spend the day with my 3 children and husband. This year we are actually heading to Langham Place for a fun, family-friendly sing along. I think the kids (and us parents) will have an absolute blast!
#mothersday #traditions via brunchwithmybaby.com

Jory Lieber of Teeny Tiny Foodie

For Mother’s Day, I like to go out for a nice meal with my husband and daughter and enjoy time outside if the weather permits. The restaurants we like (with the perk of outdoor seating) are Du Jour Bakery and Stone Park Cafe. However, I also like to celebrate by taking a little time for myself and getting a manicure and pedicure too! We love the JJ Byrne Playground in Park Slope for outdoor fun, and we also like to go to the Prospect Park Zoo or just for a neighborhood walk.

Stephanie Barnhart of Football Food and Motherhood
It’s become tradition for us to go to Freeport in Long Island for Mother’s Day — they have the nautical mile which is lined with outdoor ocean/seafood restaurants. You can sit outside on the harbor and have a cold beer and fresh seafood. This year however, we are opting against it since Maximo is so wild and will probably fall off the dock. Stay tuned to see how that plays out! Typically we eat at Otto’s Sea Grill or Rachel’s Waterside Grill. (Check out Stephanie and Maximo last Mother’s Day  at Freeport in the pic above!). The Freeport area was significantly damaged during 2012’s hurricane and only re-opened late last year, so the businesses would love your support!

Serena Norr, Managing Editor of Momtrends and The Shopping Mama
With all of the busyness in my life, I love Mother’s Day as a time to spend time with family. Since I grew up in Bay Ridge Brooklyn, we usually go there to meet my mom and my sister for an early dinner and to visit to the local parks afterward. I also love waking up to the sweet and precious handmade cards that my girls usually make me. There is nothing better (to me) on Mother’s Day then the simplicity of shutting off, eating great food and being with my family.
If these ideas don’t inspire you, here are some of our fave restaurant and outing picks:
Lunch at DUMBO’s Superfine and something sweet from Jacques Torres
Fancy SoHo lunch at Mercer Kitchen
People-watching while dining al fresco at Isabella’s on the Upper West Side
A walk around Union Square and lunch at the Blue Water Grill
Playing in Washington Market and brunch at Sarabeth’s
A day trip to Blue Hill Farm
Touring the gardens at The Cloisters and lunch at New Leaf Restaurant
Enjoy!!!

Design Your Own Popsicle: Popbar, West Village, New York

#PopBar: #kidfriendly #icecream #gelato #sorbet #dessert #westvillage #nyc via brunchwithmybaby.com

Children and ice cream . . .  it’s a sure fire way to bribe, I mean, occasionally treat your kids as well as yourself. One of my absolutely favorite dessert spots in the city is Popbar in the West Village. Their iconic dessert is a custom gelato (or sorbet) on a stick, made from fresh ingredients in the store, daily. You choose your flavor (lots of fruity options like peach and mixed berry, vegan options, plus seasonal flavors like pumpkin and kiwi), then either eat it just like that, or have it dipped in mint, milk, dark or white chocolate, and covered with “poppings” like crushed waffle (my personal favorite), or nuts. It. Is. Heaven. My husband has been known to eat two at a time.

#PopBar: #kidfriendly #icecream #gelato #sorbet #dessert #westvillage #nyc via brunchwithmybaby.com

During the cooler months, Popbar serves some warmer options, like their wafflePops and hot chocolate-on-a-stick. The wafflePops are customised waffles on sticks, a nice twist on regular waffles. Pick your filling (blueberry, chocolate chip or plain, $3.49), dip it ($.50), add poppings ($.50 each), and whipped cream ($.50 each). We had a chocolate chip filling with milk chocolate, icing sugar, crushed waffles and whipped cream on top. Holy moly.

The other cooler-weather option we tried was the hot chocolate, made with chocolate on a stick. The high-quality Belgian chocolate blocks on sticks can be bought to make at home, or mixed in the store with warm milk. And yes, if you’re temped, you can eat it right off the stick, no milk needed. Simply dip the chocolate block in warm milk and stir it in — and voila, amazing hot chocolate.

#PopBar: #kidfriendly #icecream #gelato #sorbet #dessert #westvillage #nyc via brunchwithmybaby.com

On a very rainy day, Alexis and I were invited to come into Popbar with the kids and sample some of their tasty goods. As always, bringing the kids anywhere is absolute chaos these days — but watching the little ones go to town on their wafflePops and gelatos on sticks was entertaining (not to mention messy!). It was so cute to see them sitting on stools and eating at a table like big people. Little J enjoyed half of a pistachio pop and a dark-chocolate-dipped pumpkin-flavored pop. There was a minor debacle over sharing the pumpkin one, so I am declaring that the day’s winner in terms of flavors.

One super hot day wandering through the West Village, my family and I stumbled into Popbar in a heat-induced daze. Desperate for something cool, I ordered my first hand-crafted gelato on a stick (mango!) and there it was: A delicious, cooling treat that took me right back to the summers of childhood, riding my bicycle around the neighbourhood and getting sticky hands from eating popsicles.

Popbar produces small batches of their pops (only 26 are made at a time), using natural and fresh ingredients. “The strawberries taste like strawberries, the snozberries taste like snozeberries!”.

Order your custom-made treat at the counter. First, choose your base flavor: PopGelato, PopSorbetto or YogurtPop. Then, either eat it as-is, or have it dipped in dark, milk or white chocolate. The last step is toppings – you can choose from a variety extras like crushed nuts, sprinkles and waffle cone to have your pop dipped in for the finishing touch.

The inside seating is limited to bar stools at the counter, so we usually sit on the bench outside, or walk across the street to the park and sit next to the fountain.

My favourite flavor is peach with milk chocolate and crushed waffle cone. Alec’s is strawberry with dark chocolate. A custom pop isn’t cheap. A basic pop starts at $4.50. Add 50c for dipping in chocolate and 50c for additional toppings. It’s worth it though – every bite is a taste of sweet, decadent heaven.

Last bite: A fast, sweet, customizable treat that will please the pickiest snackers in every family.
