Brewtown Newtown: The Best Sydney Inner West Cafes

Brewtown: Sydney's Best Cafes via christineknight.me

Newtown has long been a place where Sydney’s hip hangs out, but it’s really only been in the past few years that the area has seen an arrival of trendy eateries popping up. Newtown Brewtown is the epitome of the revival that’s happening in Newtown right now. It’s deliberately grungy-looking on the surface, but is actually a bit of an upscale eatery with a creative menu, and infamous Bronuts (Brewtown x cronuts).

We ordered freshly squeezed orange juice ($5) and a babyccino when we arrived to stem the hunger we’d worked up from biking over to the cafe. Note: Parking in Newtown is impossible. Where possible, get public transport.

Cheese had a pumpkin bread that was out of this world. Lots of crunchy seeds, a bit slab of some kind of maple butter. So more-ish.

Alec had the Wood Smoked Salmon (with curried Israeli couscous, poached egg, coriander, lime, $16.5). His report was that it was amazing, and unlike anything he’d ever been served for breakfast before.

My dish was the Poached Eggs on toast (with house relish, $10), and a side of avocado. The eggs were perfect, the avocado creamy and generous.

I love iced tea like nothing else, and was delighted to find Brewtown offered specially brewed iced teas. Today’s was Egyptian Rose ($6). So. So. Good.

The tables and interior in general is super tiny. No room for strollers or bulky bags, or for toys for kids to play with. We brought an activity book for Cheese and abandoned it for an iPhone when our food arrived and we needed the space.

A trip to Brewtown isn’t complete without a bronut. How beautiful do they look? We took one for the road because were were too full to eat it there.

Just a short walk away from Brewtown is Camperdown Memorial Rest Park, which has a large playground. Tables on weekends will incur a wait (ours was 30 minutes) due to how popular the cafe has become. My advice: put your name down and head down to the park for a short walk and play.

The Tea Cosy: Sydney’s Best Afternoon Tea Spots

Tea Cosy: Sydney's Best Afternoon Tea Spots via christineknight.me

In the heart of The Rocks lies one of your best bets for traditional scones in Sydney. The tiny and adorably named The Tea Cosy is an Irish-Australian family-run business, housed in a stunning 1870s heritage-listed building.

Tea Cosy: Sydney's Best Afternoon Tea Spots via christineknight.me

If you’re serious about scones and tea – and also love a fancy tea cosy – then this is an outing for you.

Tea Cosy: Sydney's Best Afternoon Tea Spots via christineknight.me

Tea Cosy: Sydney's Best Afternoon Tea Spots via christineknight.me

The Tea Cosy is small and very popular. Blink and you’ll miss the small sign the wall near the entrance to the Irish Shop (that they also own and run), letting you know that you have indeed reached scone nirvana. Walk through the narrow hallway to the back and find any table you can – or stand around and wait till someone leaves and then grab their table fast.

We had a short wait when we arrived on a rainy gloomy Saturday, but very happily found a little corner in which to squeeze. Our order overflowed from our little table.

Tea Cosy: Sydney's Best Afternoon Tea Spots via christineknight.me

Devonshire Tea (Scone Basket) $14 per person, includes your choice of drink (I chose chocolate and vanilla tea), scones and jam (I chose Raspberry), Babyccino, Ploughman’s Lunch ($15), Ribbon Sandwiches in curried egg and tomato ($9.50).

Tea Cosy: Sydney's Best Afternoon Tea Spots via christineknight.me

The Babyccino actually came with TWO marshmallows, both of which were nabbed before I could get a shot.

I shared the scones with Cheese, who insisted that hers was also topped with the amazing raspberry jam and cream. Alec loved the jam so much he bought a jar to take home. His ploughman’s platter was light and yet filling – as described, it is indeed the perfect traditional lunch (for those who like meat).

All of the scones at The Tea Cosy are made by hand from scratch, using an old fashioned family recipe. Their jams are Australian-made gourmet jams, and the cream is double thick.

Tea Cosy: Sydney's Best Afternoon Tea Spots via christineknight.me

The food was so good, I honestly couldn’t fault a thing. The staff were really lovely – it’s really obvious that this is a family-run business as the people who run the joint really care about their customers and ensuring that they have a great experience. They’re also really friendly and chatty, which is also a nice experience in itself.

A little stroll around The Tea Cosy reveals many, many, many tea cosies. These can be bought for very reasonable prices (I saw labels for around $25 – $35). As each looks handmade and unique, that sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

Brewristas: Kid-Friendly Cafes, Glebe, Sydney

Brewristas: #kidfriendly #cafes #Glebe #sydney via christineknight.me

If you love your caffeine hit, take yourself to Brewristas for some speciality coffee and really delicious food to boot. The new cafe specialises in coffee (duh), and their 12-hour cold drip coffee blends are perfect for the steamy Sydney summer. With names like Cold Brew, Brewmondae and Brewtea, all 3 are produced and bottled in-house, and give a massive buzz, so be warned!

brewristas-glebe-3

Honestly, I don’t like coffee, but Alec does, which is why we ended up at Brewristas for brunch one Saturday. With an ex-Bills Darlinghurst chef at the helm in the kitchen, I was expecting the food to be pretty darn good (which it was).

The cafe has three distinct dining areas, with lots of space to move – even enough for large strollers to maneuver without hitting other diners, which has made the cafe a popular spot for local mother’s groups.

We were seated on the roomy patio out back, which is also where the giant chalkboard and swing are, so the perfect spot for families.

Cheese and I shared a Nutella Frappe ($7). It usually comes with coffee, but they staff will make one without it if asked. It was light and cold and just enough Nutella to fulfill my craving without getting sickly sweet.

My dish was the Toasted Sourdough ($5) with Poached Eggs ($4), Avocado ($2) and Roasted Tomato ($2). It was a really good size and also price and I was left feeling satisfied but not over-full. Very flavoursome food, and well poached eggs.

Alec ordered Porky Pig’s Hotteok ($15), the cafe’s take on the bacon and egg roll. In this version, the “bread” is two toasted honey jam-stuffed pancakes, (typically a Korean snack that’s sold on the sidewalk in winter), with spicy guacamole and mango habanero mayo.

Black Star Pastry Rosebery via christineknight.me

Just a quick post today about the new Black Star Pastry that’s opened up in Rosebery (you can read my longer review of Black Star Pastry in Newtown here). I absolutely love the Black Star pastries and cakes (in particular the amazing watermelon cake!), so this addition so the Black Stars in a ‘hood near me is extremely welcome.

I’ll be heading to this Black Star in the future, not just because it’s closer, but also because it has a large seating area (unlike the Newtown one which is tiny and has almost no seating) and also has some toys for kids to play with while their parents are swooning over their cakes and croissants.

I just moved into our new place in the inner Eastern Suburbs, and discovered the (also new to the ‘hood) Nan’s Place in Zetland. This cute little cafe is certain to be our new regular hangout. I really appreciated how sweet the staff were when I arrived one afternoon with a friend, her 3-month-old and my 3-year-old in tow.

We had a lovely window seat, which meant I could sit on the end and stop Miss E from escaping. E really enjoyed looking out the window behind us and waving to the people trying to eat their lunch.

The babyccino was a choice of a tiny takeaway cup or glass.

For our meals, I ordered myself the Nutella Filled French Toast ($7), and E the Vegemite and Two Cheese Toastie ($7.50). My dining companion ordered the Poached Organic Hens Eggs ($10) with Caramlised Fennel and Confit Garlic Hash and House Hot Sauce ($5).

The Best Pastries In Town; Adriano Zumbo Cafe, Rozelle, Sydney

#AdrianoZumbo #Cafe #Rozelle #Sydney via brunchwithmybaby.com

If it’s possible you haven’t heard of Adriano Zumbo until now, you’ve been missing out on the best pastry chef in Sydney’s amazingly creative desserts and macarons that the rest of Sydney have been raving about (and lining up for!) for years.

Zumbo is a country boy from Coonamble. He opened his first shop in Balmain in 2007, where the sugared-up locals couldn’t get enough of his unique pastries.

My own love affair with Zumbo’s pastries began many many years ago, back when the Zumbo cafe was on Darling street. It was teeny tiny and filled with desserts beyond my imagination. I was such a fan that Alec hired the cafe for my 30th birthday and treated all of my friends to a decedent afternoon tea. Fastforward past the MasterChef croquembouche season that made Zumbo a household name, and now he’s is so well known that you’d be hard pressed to go to any of Zumbo’s cafes or bakeries and not have to queue for a tasty morsel.

#AdrianoZumbo #Cafe #Rozelle #Sydney via brunchwithmybaby.com

I absolutely love The Lab, the Zumbo cafe on Terry street in Rozelle. It has a bit of seating in the back thanks to some benches and stools, and sells lots savories like delectable quiches, pies, sausages rolls and sourdough loaves as well as the tarts, bar cakes, pastries and macarons that Zumbo is famous for. The cafe doesn’t have the full range of desserts (head to the Darling st Balmain bakery for that), but I prefer it so we can sit down, order a coffee and a babyccino, and eat the food the way Zumbo intended — which is very quickly after it was created.

There is in fact a sign in the cafe/bakery warning customers to eat their goodies pretty quickly. They don’t stand up to temperature changes and are very delicate, so it’s not uncommon to get your prized pastry home and open it to find it’s been smushed thanks to carless transportation.

While you’re lining up or sitting and eating, be sure to peer through the large viewing window and watch the chefs whip up the delicious creations which are then delivered to the Zumbo stores daily.

Oregano Bakery - #kid-friendly #restaurants - #South Hurstville, #Sydney via brunchwithmybaby.com/sydney

Having seen Oregano Bakery scrolls at many cafes dotted around the Sutherland Shire and yet to taste their delicious goodness we decided to head to the source and sample some treats on a gloomy late Sunday morning. Arriving closer to lunch time the savoury menu appealed and with good cause.

The menu is succinct yet varied with plenty of options for kids and adults alike. We opted for a Cheese Pizza ($6.50) for the children, Zaatar Wrap 1 – Sonia’s Special ($9.00) and a Sujuc Pizza with Egg ($9.00) and this was plenty of food for us all.

Your New Regular Coffee Shop: Konditori, Cobble Hill, New York

#Konditori #CobbleHill brunchwithmybaby.com

We are always searching for a new great coffee place that will deliver my flat white-obsessed husband with a consistent cup of decent coffee. His most recent obsession is Konditori, a Swedish cafe that aspires to combine the hominess of Swedish Coffee Culture with the edginess of Brooklyn. I’ve never been to Sweden, so I can’t comment on how accurately the cafe represents the “Swedish coffee hominess”, but what I do know is my husband has been stopping by this cafe twice a week on his way to deliver Cheese to pre school since it opened, and gets REALLY mad if Cheese isn’t ready for school in time for him to get his regular cup of jo.

Since I’m not a coffee drinker he promised me a good hot chocolate and selection of fine baked goods, which was enough for me to accompany him and Cheese on their regular coffee ritual one morning.

#Konditori #CobbleHill brunchwithmybaby.com

As well as a seriously good cup of coffee (the husband obviously has stamped it so) you can pick up a hand rolled kettle boiled bagel, gourmet muffins and Swedish treats like Cardamom Bread (coffee bread with almond filling), Kanelbulle (cinnamon rolls) and Coco Balls.

#Konditori #CobbleHill brunchwithmybaby.com

The cafe also has a fresh juice bar, which has a little IKEA train set running around the tip jar — a magnet for toddlers and adults waiting for their juices alike. Cheese was obsessed with the trains, and we were both very happy when told it was fine for her to take the train back to the table play with (bless you!).

#Konditori #CobbleHill brunchwithmybaby.com

In the back of the store is a huge foosball table (another prime toddler distractor) and plenty of room if you need to park your giant stroller.

#Konditori #CobbleHill brunchwithmybaby.com

I ordered a hot chocolate ($2.25) and one of the gourmet muffins ($2.50). I thought it was blueberry banana, but I could only find blueberries, so who knows, maybe I read the sign wrong. Either way, it was a good, solid muffin, and the hot chocolate was delicious.

#Konditori #CobbleHill brunchwithmybaby.com

I had to act quickly to snap Alec’s latte ($3.50) and croissant ($2.50) before they disappeared. Part of his weekly ritual with Cheese is for them to enjoy croissants together.

#Konditori #CobbleHill brunchwithmybaby.com

The Konditori staff were very happy to make a special “toddler” hot chocolate for Cheese. Basically this means I ask them to dilute the hot chocolate heavily with whole milk, and put it in a straw cup for her to drink. This both takes away from it being too chocolately for a toddler, and also brings it down to the perfect temperature for toddlers straight away, so we can skip the “you have to wait, it’s too hot!” talk.

Baked Patisserie: Kid-Friendly Cafes, Kirrawee, Sutherland Shire, NSW

There was an ulterior motive when we decided to visit Baked Patisserie for morning tea and it centred on the rumours of magnificent cronuts and macarons to rival the king of macaron – Adriano Zumbo! As a plus, this tucked-away patisserie appeals to kids with a range of sweet delights from an evolving menu.

Baked Patisserie - #kid-friendly #cafe - #Kirrawee, #Sydney via brunchwithmybaby.com

Being in the industrial side of Kirrawee, Baked Patisserie doesn’t really fit with its surroundings. However they are building up quite a cult following and why wouldn’t they with mouth-watering treats, such as the Raspberry & Vanilla Cronut ($5), Macarons ($2.50) and a reasonable $4.00 for a large coffee.

Baked Patisserie - #kid-friendly #cafe - #Kirrawee, #Sydney via brunchwithmybaby.com

Jenson didn’t care about which flavour macaron he wanted, he went for the brightest possible colour (green) – which I believe was Pistachio and was devoured with a nod of approval. I savoured my cronut without thinking that J would soon turn his eyes to the remaining half on my plate, and in his usual negotiating style asked that we share the rest as sharing is a nice thing to do. I can’t fault his approach!

Baked Patisserie - #kid-friendly #cafe - #Kirrawee, #Sydney via brunchwithmybaby.com

Baked Patisserie certainly caters for the little people with a small train set set up alongside one wall to play with, a high chair for the littler ones, which is a good thing, as you want to savour the quality coffee on offer. These little additions, along with the friendly service, make this cafe very kid-friendly.

A trip to Huskisson is not complete unless you stop at the affectionately known Husky Bakery for something delicious. On previous visits we got take-out, but today, with nothing much on the agenda we opted for dine in and were surprised at how kid-friendly the Husky Bakery really is! Whilst you can’t really go wrong with a sweets display full of fresh and fun options, the Husky Bakery has really catered towards the younger crowds. There is a long covered eat-in area out the back with several highchairs available for use, but the best bit is the full size playground set – also under cover for the kids to run riot whilst the adults enjoy a coffee or two.

Our food choices were simple but very fresh and the coffee hot and tasty. Cupcakes were right at child eye-level and it worked, Jenson ordered a bright pink Cupcake ($2.80).
