A Horizon Club stay at the Shangri-La Hotel, Sydney

The Shangri-La, Sydney is nestled in the historic Rocks District, is a luxury hotel with panoramic views of the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge.

A stay at the Shangri-La, Sydney is always a special occasion, but for this special birthday we decided to splurge on a Horizon Club room, which comes with a whole host of special benefits.

The Shangri-La Sydney is a large hotel, with 565 rooms, three restaurants and one bar. The hotel is located between Circular Quay and Wynyard train stations. It’s a bit of a walk from both, including a steep uphill section.

This stay we chose a Horizon Club Sydney Harbour Room with a king bed and rollaway bed. The room came with absolutely spectacular 180-degree views across Sydney Harbour, Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour.

Our favourite feature of the room was the padded window seat that we could all fit on and the block out curtains that fell behind it. After sunset we sat on the seat and pulled the curtains behind us and looked out at the beautiful harbour and the sparkling lights. It was just heaven.

The Horizon Club Sydney Harbour Rooms are located on levels 31-35, guaranteeing a breathtaking view. The rooms all include access to the exclusive Horizon Club Lounge with its full range of privileges.

The room itself is elegant and understated. Luxe furnishings that are bright and beautiful.

We loved the large marble bathroom containing a separate bath and shower.

Other amenities include plush Shangri-La bathrobes (which we wore to the pool), a pillow menu (we ordered different pillows and they were divine), premium Shangri-La toiletries, Wi-Fi Access, LCD flatscreen television, DVD entertainment system, In-house movie channels, a full-size executive writing desk, electronic safe, coffee / tea-making facilities and a mini-bar.

Horizon Club Benefits

The added benefits of the Horizon Club definitely made the cost of the room worthwhile. While on the website a 4pm late check-out also listed as a benefit of this package, it is subject to availability and we were not able to get this benefit when we stayed.

We visited the Horizon Club Lounge for afternoon tea, canapés and breakfast the next morning. The ability to use the lounge during these times meant we didn’t need to buy any extra meals during our stay, as the offerings were so hearty!

The afternoon tea is served between 2pm-5pm and includes scones with jam and cream, a selection of sandwiches (all meat) and pastries. The Shangri-La, Sydney is able to provide food for dietary requirements with enough notice given.

Horizon Club Lounge canapés

Evening canapés includes alcoholic drinks which the staff refill constantly throughout the evening. The canapé time from 6pm-8pm is the perfect time for dinner with kids! Our fussy eater didn’t see enough that she liked on the buffet tables, so we ordered a kids meal from room service and had it delivered to the lounge. Easy peasy, it arrived on our table about 20 minutes later.

The buffet had an excellent selection of savoury food, hot and cold, salads, cheese and crackers and desserts. It was quite meat heavy, however the Shangri-La, Sydney is able to provide food for dietary requirements with enough notice given (next time I will remember this and let them know in advance that we are vegetarian!) There was still plenty of food that was edible, however, and we were absolutely stuffed by the end.

Lots of people can be found in the lounge during all times of the day, particularly the evening canapés. Some people are with a group and socialising, some reading books and relaxing. While there is a dress code for using the lounge, we saw many guests in extremely casual attire, so I wouldn’t take the dress code too seriously. We dressed up for the occasion for a fun thing to do, but it certainly isn’t required.

Breakfast is also available in the Horizon Club Lounge from 6:30am-10:30am daily and until 11am on weekends. The breakfast is advertised as a “light buffet” – however, we thought it was a fantastic feast!

We particularly loved the egg station where we had custom omelettes made for us. A variety of hot and cold food is available, fruit, pastries, cereals, tea, coffee and juices.

We love a good hotel pool, particularly when it’s indoors and heated in winter! The Shangri-La, Sydney pool is a large pool with a separate spa with bubble jets, located in the health club.

Blu Bar High Tea Buffet

For an absolute treat, I highly recommend the high tea buffet that is offered in the Blu Bar on level 36. It is just delicious and such a treat! It’s also very pricey and no discount for kids, so I would suggest making this an adult-only treat.

Getting to the Shangri-La, Sydney

If you drive to the Shangri-La, Sydney, valet parking is available: $58 for in-house hotel guests, $44 for restaurant patrons, $40 for guests with functions at the hotel, and $22 for guests who have appointments at our spa. There is a cheaper parking station at Wilson parking – Quay West at 111 Harrington St, The Rocks if you don’t mind a bit of a walk.

Novotel Darling Harbour: Sydney Hotel Review

The Novotel hotels are renowned for being an extremely family-friendly choice, and the Novotel Darling Harbour is no exception. We took a tour of the hotel recently and thought it made an excellent choice for Sydney accomodation.

The Novotel Darling Harbour was the first Accor and Novotel hotel in Australia. All rooms are undergoing a soft refresh in 2018 with new carpet and furniture.

Of the 525 rooms at the Novotel, 50% face Darling Harbour, and 50% have inter-connecting rooms. The rooms are comprised of 441 standard/superior rooms and 72 executive rooms and junior suites. The interconnecting rooms have one room with a queen bed and one with two double beds, a perfect set up for families.

As with all Novotels, the hotel has a kids’ only activity space next to the Trenery Restaurant. Kids also receive a welcome pack at check in. During the school holidays the Novotel Darling Harbour offers special family activities such as movies in the conference room. They also partner with merlin Entertainment year-round to provide guests with great deals on attractions as part of their stay at the hotel.

The Novotel is the only Sydney CBD hotel with its own tennis court – this can be found on the roof, next to the pool. There is also a gym for guests over 16.

The Trenery Restaurant is a beautiful, bright space for dining in. They offer a very reasonably priced Kids menu with activities and crayons.

Location is one of the most important factors for choosing a hotel and the Novotel Darling Harbour is in an excellent position. It’s a short walk over a walkway into the Darling Harbour shopping centre, where you’ll also find plenty of restaurants. Nearby attractions include the International Convention Centre Sydney (ICC), Australian National Maritime Museum, Sea Life Sydney Aquarium, Wild Life Sydney Zoo, the Powerhouse Museum and Star Casino.

If you are relying on public transport to get around, there is a nearby light rail station including light rail (nearest station is Convention), ferry (nearest stop is Pyrmont Bay Wharf) and train is only a 15 minute walk to Town Hall station.

In April 2018 the Novotel also launched new wellness items for kids including in-room programs and menus.

The kids in-room program stars Sally Fitzgibbons and Rachael Coopes and takes kids through exercises designed to keep them active on vacation, or help them wind down in the evenings.

A new menu has been designed for kids featuring classics including spaghetti bolognaise with hidden vegetables, fruit smoothies and tasty desserts like berries and yoghurt.

Hotel Review: The Langham Sydney

For a slice of luxury in historic Rocks district, you can’t go past the The Langham, Sydney. A few blocks removed from the hustle and bustle of the CBD streets, The Langham feels like a peaceful world unto itself, with luxurious furnishings, elegant rooms and attentive staff.

The Langham Sydney is a renowned 5-star hotel. It used to be called the Observatory Hotel before it was bought by the Langham brand. A recent refurbishment has resulted in luxury, opulence and chic elegance.

While the hotel is incredible quiet, it’s only 1.5 km from the Queen Victoria Building and 1.9 km from the Sydney Opera House, making it a fantastic location for a Sydney stay.

The Langham Sydney is a smaller hotel with only three floors. Each sophisticated room or suite is massive by regular room standards. Suites add living areas, and upgraded suites add kitchenettes, dining areas or bars. Some of the rooms have private terraces or balconies.

All of the deluxe rooms fit up to three people. We chose the cheapest room available for our stay which was a “City View” room, with an option of two double beds or one king bed.

Each room at The Langham Sydney features excellent air conditioning and free Wi-Fi, a flatscreen TV, wardrobe with a safe, iron, and ironing board, refrigerated private bar, Espresso machine plus tea, and coffee making facilities. 24-hour room service is available with a decent range of options. Valet parking is available for $50 a night.

If you decide to dine in, there is a restaurant downstairs, but if you step outside the hotel there are lots of options a few metres down the road, or a little further into the Rocks area.

Other facilities in the hotel available to guests include a stunning indoor heated pool, a fitness centre and a tennis court.

While we have stayed at The Langham previously as a couple, it was our first time staying as a family. We loved all the kid-friendly features of the hotel that we had never noticed before.

The lolly buffet at reception was popular with kids and adults alike.

In our room, we found a giant freckle chocolate and a complementary orange juice.

A kids welcome pack was left for Cheese, which included a kid-sized robe and slippers to use, and a back pack and badge for her to keep.

If you love high tea (like I do!) then I would suggest booking into the hotel for an afternoon tea.

The Langham continues to impress. It will continue to be our go-to hotel in Sydney.
