Visit the vibrant regional city of Dubbo. Go wild at Taronga Western Plains Zoo and discover the region’s history and heritage. There are plenty of things to do in Dubbo!

Taronga Western Plains Zoo

The highlight for us of all the things to do in Dubbo, and indeed to prime reason why many people head to this city, would have to be Taronga Western Plains Zoo. The 6km circuit of animals is a huge outing, often requiring two days to cover.

Old Dubbo Goal

Old Dubbo Goal is a heritage-listed tourist attraction built in the 19th century and home to historic buildings and artefacts telling of its former life as a courthouse lockup and goal. The Goal features a large range of animatronics and holographic displays to create a realistic look into its brutal history.

We stayed at the Best Western Bluegum Motel. We highly recommend this 4.5 star property that was quiet, friendly and catered extremely well to families with large rooms and plenty of beds, plus removal of items in minibars, a kitchenette and free milk.

Things to do in Parkes NSW

The world-famous Parkes Radio Telescope ‘The Dish’, the Henry Parkes Centre, Peak Hill Open Cut Experience and vibrant street art are just a few things to do in Parkes.

The shire of Parkes is best-known for the Parkes Radio Telescope ‘The Dish’, however there are plenty of things to do in the town and surrounding area to justify more than an overnight stay.

The Dish

The CSIRO Parkes Radio Telescope, star of the movie ‘The Dish,’ (2000) is located 20km north of Parkes, a a short 5km detour off the Newell Highway. It’s free to enter the Visitor Discovery Centre to explore the world of astronomy and learn about the role The Dish plays in ‘listening to the stars’.

The hands-on exhibits will entertain the kids, as will the scavenger hunt activity option. There is also an excellent gift shop with a wide range of astronomy and space science books, DVD’s, science toys and souvenirs and a 3D theatre that runs every half hour (additional fee applies to watch the film).

A snack at the Dish Cafe is an excellent way to enjoy the view of The Dish while recharging with brekkie, lunch, morning tea, coffee or a milkshake.

The Discovery Centre is open 7 days a week from 8.30am to 4.15pm.

The Henry Parkes Centre

The Henry Parkes Centre incorporates four museums and the Parkes Visitor Information Centre.

The King’s Castle Elvis Exhibit and Parkes Motor Museum adjoin the Visitor Information Centre. One pass gives entry to both collections. A separate admission fee applies to access to the Henry Parkes Museum and Antique Machinery Collection, which feature exhibits from traditional family history collections and agricultural machinery and equipment.

The Kings Castle is a collection of Elvis’ personal artefacts owned by Greg Page, the original ‘Yellow Wiggle’, expressing some of Elvis Presley’s life and career highs and lows.

The Parkes Motor Museum is a collection of motor vehicles owned by the Parkes Antique Motor Club representing all heritage motoring eras. Up to 24 cars, 10 motorcycles and other motoring memorabilia are in display including 1914 Alldays and Onions, 1940 Holden bodied Oldsmobile Convertible, 1986 Jaguar XJ6 Paris Show display car.

Learn about Sir Henry Parkes inside Moat Cottage, a replica of where the Australian Statesman and ‘Father of Federation’ was born in Country Warwickshire, near the city of Coventry, England. The 20 min free theatre experience inside Moat Cottage tells the story of Sir Henry Parkes and his connection to Parkes.

The Henry Parkes Museum and Antique Machinery Exhibit depict early life in Parkes through objects, photos and historical information. A collection of historic buildings are houses on the site including a wooden schoolhouse and two churches, blacksmith shop, Silver City Comet carriage and 45 tractors.

A lovely green space with covered BBQ area, picnic facilities, off-leash dog park, play equipment and a 3075 ‘S’ Class steam locomotive.

HARS Parkes Aviation Museum

The HARS Parkes Aviation Museum is currently housed in a former RAAF hangar from the airport’s time as a World War Two air force base. Exhibits on display or being assembled include a Bell AH-1 Huey Cobra, De Havilland DHC-4 Caribou (A4-275), De Havilland DH.114 Heron (VH – AHB) and Convair 580 (VH-PDW).

It’s a truly fascinating experience to wander around the museum and watch the exhibits being restored and assembled.

Download the Public Art Trail map to your phone and wander the Parkes CBD to enjoy public art installations that represent the region’s local culture and icons.

Big Fish Fossil Hut

Drop by the Big Fish Fossil Hut to enjoy a collection of specimens that lived across Eastern Australia over 700 million years ago. On display are trilobites, ammonites, seastars and arinoids through to fish, amphibians and dinosaurs. The collection includes the largest fossil fish on display anywhere in Australia – the Xiphactinus, which lived during the time of the dinosaurs and is about 4.5 metres long.

Peak Hill Gold Mine Experience

The historic Peak Hill mine operated from 1893 to 1917. Redeveloped in 2002 as a tourist attraction, the Peak Hill Gold Mine Experience is a great way to learn about mining techniques by strolling along the self-guided walking trails.

We really enjoyed dining at Bellas Cafe & Licensed Italian Restaurant (245 Clarinda St, Parkes). It’s extremely family-friendly and serves great food.

We stayed at the Station Motel (82 Peak Hill Rd, Parkes). The Station Motel features comfortable basic rooms with free WiFi, ac/heating and parking.

Bishop’s Court Estate: A Luxury Stay in Bathurst

A stay at the Bishop’s Court Estate is like spending the night at the house of a friend. If your friend lived in a luxurious, historic mansion, that is. Built in 1870 as the home of the first Anglican Bishop, Bishops Court Estate is a two-storey Victorian mansion that has been exquisitely restored to its former glory by owner Christine Le Fevre.

Le Fevre greets us by name as we arrive, and ushers us into our rooms, which all have their own name and character. There are only six rooms in this boutique hotel, making the stay a cosy, intimate affair. My room for the night is the Bishops Room – the bedroom that was previously reserved for the Bishop of the house.

The room is spacious and elegant, decorated with a unique art collection and European inspired furniture. There is direct access to the upper terrace from the room, which overlooks the chapel and garden. It’s peaceful, luscious and so relaxing. Complimentary port and choccies await me in the room, a lovely surprise gift for guests.

A big quick of the rooms at Bishop’s Court Estate is their lack of in-room ensuites. Only one room at the hotel has a bathroom ensuite, the rest, all large, luxurious bathrooms, are allocated to each room in different locations nearby. It’s pretty easy to slip on the provided plush robe and totter down the hall, and kind of feels like I’m on set at Downton Abbey when I do.

In the evening the chapel is filled with candles and transformed into the ethereal eatery that is 9inety 2wo restaurant. They serve Modern Australian cuisine in one of the most beautiful surrounds I’ve ever dined in.

Our meal is delicious. I enjoy the twice baked asparagus Soufflé with blue cheese and parmesan crisp, hand-cut pasta with mushrooms and baked stuffed eggplant with asparagus risotto, braised okra and spinach sauce. I’m similarly stuffed and can’t fit in dessert, which is a crying shame as it’s an exquisite-looking creme brulee.

It’s to bed after dinner, which is a wonderfully short stroll up the stairs, and to sleep on my bed, which is so comfortable it feels like sleeping on a cloud.

In the morning I’m cheerfully greeted by Le Fevre when I emerge downstairs, and step outside to explore the gardens. Serene angel statues are dotted throughout the greenery, giving the garden a celestial feel that, when combined with the solitude of the estate, gives a feeling of supreme peace.

Around the corner from the chapel is the chook shed, where the “Spice Girls”, Le Fevre’s much-loved chickens, live a life of luxury.

The eggs served at breakfast in the house dish, the “Bishop’s Court Stack” are freshly laid by the Spice Girls, with the fruit grown in the kitchen garden. We sit at a long table, strangers no more. We depart Bishop’s Court Estate as newly found friends, thanks to Le Fevre’s extraordinary warmth and hospitality, and the unique bonding experience of spending a night in this gorgeous estate.

Things To See & Do In Historic Bathurst, NSW

Bathurst is home to 1000 heritage buildings, with over 200 years of European history, and tens of thousands of years of indigenous heritage. It’s a small country town yet it is bustling with energy and colour, the locals’ pride in their town unmistakable.

On May 7, 1815 Bathurst was declared a townsite by Governor Lachlan Macquarie making it Australia’s oldest inland settlement. It was a prominent town during the gold-rush, and features many well preserved buildings from the 1800s.

A walk along the streets of Bathurst is like strolling through an open air museum, with buildings from its past including workers’ cottages, industrial and commercial buildings, terrace houses, mansions, slab huts and grand civic structures from 1815 to the 1950 still intact around the town.

Plenty of architecture from The Colonial Period (1815-1840) can be seen in the simple structure of the buildings, mostly of characteristic Bathurst red brick, sometimes lime washed.

Before Europeans came to Bathurst, the indigenous Wiradjuri people lived in the surrounding lands for more than 40,000 years. You can read more about the history of the Wiradjuri people and European settlement of the area here.

Not a rev head? Me neither. I still recommend a drive up the top of Mount Panorama to admire the spectacular view of Bathurst down below, and for the experience of driving around the world-famous race track that is available to drive as a public road 27/7 (albeit at a much-slower 60km per hour).

Step back in time
Pick up a free map and take yourself on a walk through Bathurst’s past. The streets of Bathurst are lined with impressive buildings, impressive monuments and gorgeous parks that reflect the history of the city. Particular buildings of note include the Bathurst Court House, built in 1880, and the Bathurst Railway Station (pictured above, circa 1875) with its historic Chifley Engine is on display.

A modern, highly celebrated regional gallery with free entry, specialising in contemporary art. If you’re visiting over the school holidays, Bathurst Regional Art Gallery runs hands-on workshops for kids in conjunction with the Bathurst City Library.

Australian Fossil and Mineral Museum
Get an up close look at the natural history of Earth. Almost 2000 fossil and mineral specimens are displayed in two exhibitions – the MasterFoods Fossil Gallery and the Minerals Gallery. On show are rare mineral specimens and even a few dinosaurs and fossilized eggs.

Play outside
Take kids to the Adventure Playground, a state-of-the-art outdoor play space designed for children of all-abilities. Featuring dinosaur statues and footprints, a dual flying fox, slides, a maze and sandpit, you’ll find it hard to drag the kids away.

The Begonia House and Machattie Park
This council-owned and operated greenhouse is a perfect example of the town’s pride in it’s appearance and culture. Begonia House is filled with stunning begonia flowers between February and April (9am-4pm weekdays, 11am-3pm weekends).

Begonia House is situated in beautiful Machattie Park park which has a fair amount of pretty flowers itself, plus a fountain and arbour. Its history is more gruesome – it used to be the site of the old city gaol and executions took place where the beautiful greenery now lies.

A little slice of France in regional Australia. Legall is owned and run by Frenchman Phillippe Le Gall, and is renowned for its macarons, éclairs, fruit tartlets and freshly baked bread.

Where to stay
I stayed at Bishop’s Court Estate, a Victorian mansion built in 1870 by Australia’s first Anglican Bishop, Samuel Marsden. Interior designer Christine Le Fevre bought the mansion in 2001, restored it to its current magnificent state and turned it into an award-winning, luxury boutique hotel. Guests arrive at Bishop’s Court Estate as strangers and leave as friends, thanks to the warm welcome given by owner Le Fevre, her cuddly cats and “spice girls”, the much-pampered chickens who live a life of luxury while providing guests with eggs for brekkie.
