GIVEAWAY: Elly ‘The Horse Parade’ bermuda shorts (worth $39)!

Elly CNY 2014 - The Horse Parade - Brunch With My Baby

Nothing to spur a parent into action like the words (especially when blurted urgently) Chinese New Year is coming! Specifically, from grandparents that want to be super sure you and the kids have a brand new set of clothes for the occasion.

Fortunately for us, our (extended) family don’t celebrate CNY with a vengeance, so the kids aren’t subject to being dragged around from home-to-home for hours on end (this is what my local friends complain about the most).

Unfortunately for us, it means we don’t have an excuse to get decked out in outfit after outfit of CNY themed stuff!

So we haven’t really gone crazy snapping up CNY outfits, but the range from Elly got me really excited because their CNY “The Horse Parade” range is just so wearable through the year! Check out that link and you’ll know what I mean.

Anyway, both boys ended up with their Red Horses and White Horses bermuda shorts (click that link for more details and photos of the shorts). I personally like these BEST out their whole boys range because:

  1. The fabric is thin but strong. It will last through tumbling around and regular wear and tear.
  2. The style is classic and smart-casual. I love how these are comfy and slip on easily, but still look nice and preppy.
  3. The print is freakin’ cute. It’s subtle enough (ie. not a blinding array of colours) to pair with various tops.
  4. The shorts are actually unisex! Quite a few girls I know are going to be rocking these.

Here’s your chance to score a pair of Elly’s new CNY Red Horses and White Horses bermuda shorts!

Elly are giving away one pair of ‘The Horse Parade’ bermuda shorts

GIVEAWAY: Win one of five BabySafe Kid Pillows (worth $48.80 each)!

Baby Safe - Brunch With My Baby Singapore

Chris and I splurged on really nice latex pillows and mattress when we moved to Singapore 2+ years ago. We aren’t alone – most people I know are willing to splurge on really comfortable bedding, rationalizing that we are lying on them at least 6-7 hours a day, even more so than sitting on a couch!

Yet, for some reason, I haven’t seen many quality baby/kid bedding around. They are either just stuffed, or made with foam. And kids sleep on their pillow and mattress for 12 hours a night… not even including their nap times!

Hunter has always used the BabySafe latex mattress and pillow, since birth. The firm and breathable latex provides excellent support and safety for a baby, and I couldn’t find any other bedding that was superior.

When Carter was born, I gave him Hunter’s BabySafe latex mattress and pillow, and got Hunter a regular pillow and cheap foam mattress *ahem*. He used this for a couple of months, and I always felt bad whenever I changed his sheets and saw the poor/crappy quality of the foam! So I was really delighted to finally transition him (back) to the BabySafe mattress and pillow a few weeks ago.

Baby Safe - Brunch With My Baby Singapore

BabySafe latex range is hypoallergenic, and provides firm orthopaedic support for spinal alignment and adjusts comfortably to the contours of the baby’s body. Aside from preventing allergies, it is naturally mold and mildew resistant, inhibiting dust-mite infestation. Being natural, it contains no toxic substance and unlike synthetic materials, does not emit fumes. It is also self-ventilating, reducing the risk of suffocation.

I am super happy that BabySafe are being brilliant and want to offer a giveaway!

BabySafe are giving away 5 Kid Pillows (worth $48.80 each)!

Baby Safe - Brunch With My Baby Singapore

You’ll see below that there are a variety of pillows for babies and kids. Hunter (at 2+ years old) currently uses the BabySafe Kid Pillow and I love how it is molded. My own pillow is a molded latex pillow, so I know how comfortable this is!

Baby Safe - Brunch With My Baby Singapore

Below is the BabySafe Kid Pillow and the BabySafe mattress. The mattresses come in a variety of sizes to suit almost all cots. I like how both come with a soft 100% cotton cover, so they can be whipped off and washed easily.

Baby Safe - Brunch With My Baby Singapore

Here’s a peek at the latex mattress uncovered. Latex holds its shape beautifully, and doesn’t attract dust mites and bed bugs – a huge plus in my book. It’s also a very heavy mattress, which I like because it doesn’t feel flimsy like regular cheap foam mattresses.

Baby Safe - Brunch With My Baby Singapore

BabySafe include one set of sheets when you purchase their products, but I usually go out and get extras. Made of 100% sateen cotton, they are really smooth and soft and come in cute prints. Below you will see the BabySafe mattress, BabySafe Kid Pillow, BabySafe bolster… all in Hunters bed from Mothercare (I believe BabySafe mattresses will fit any Mothercare bed).

Baby Safe - Brunch With My Baby Singapore

Hunter is bizzarely HUGELY fascinated with the latex mattress, and insisted I put it on the ground for him and Carter to lie on. And they did, for ages!! When I tried to cover it up with sheets and put it back in his bed, he had Meltdown Central. Go figure.

Here he is inspecting his new bedding, after he finally allowed me to put it all back in his bed.

Baby Safe - Brunch With My Baby Singapore

He then wanted to hop on in and test it out…

“OK I nap now, Mama!”

REALLY???? Well, go right ahead…..!

Representing Your 'Hood: The Brooklyn Block Scarves

The Brooklyn Block #brooklynblock Scarves: Wear Your 'Hood via brunchwithmybaby.com

One of the crappiest things about crappy weather is having to do all your usual toting around of your kid, but now with tons more layers and accessories. The one bright spot? Winter layers that have style and street cred, like these scarves from The Brooklyn Block.

The Brooklyn Block folks have created a line of scarves that represent different neighborhoods in Brooklyn, like DUMBO, Red Hook and Clinton Hill. The process is something to geek-out about: First, they take videos of the various locations across Brooklyn, then they process them into code to generate specific patterns. The generated pattern is then printed on a scarf, reflecting the colors, layers and textures of that particular neighborhood.

Since we’re full of Brooklyn pride, Alexis and I were eager to take these scarves out into our own ‘hoods; Alexis in DUMBO, and me in Clinton Hill.

Each scarf is its own little work of art. Notice how beautifully each scarf picks up the colors of the specific Brooklyn neighborhood it represents. In DUMBO, Alexis’s scarf picked up the mellow shades of blue and grey of a late winter afternoon. And in Clinton Hill, Christine’s scarf played off of the subtle purples of the brownstones, and the grays from the wrought iron railings on the stoops.

The Brooklyn Block scarves are currently available online. Current blocks you can wear are Clinton Hill/Fort Greene, Red Hook, DUMBO and Dekalb Market. No news yet on if Park Slope will make the cut.

LE PETIT SOCIETY GIVEAWAY: Win one of two USD$50 gift vouchers!

Le Petit Society - Brunch With My Baby Singapore

Le Petit Society is a childrens fashion label based in Hong Kong (owned by Singaporeans living there), with super cool Asian street style clothing paired with European quality.

Only one year old, it’s quickly becoming a cult favourite in both Hong Kong and Singapore, thanks to their simple-but-cool designs. Personally? I like how it’s Asia owned, run, and made. There aren’t many local labels that offer interesting designs and good quality, so I fully support companies that do.

Le Petit Society stocks sizes from newborn to seven years old. And, some news hot off the press: they are opening a Singapore-based fulfilment centre next month (Dec) to get SG orders out even faster.

REVIEW: Ella’s Botanicals from BetterBeauty.sg

BetterBeauty.sg - Ella's Botanicals

Ella’s Botanicals is one of the brands stocked by BetterBeauty.sg, an online store based in Singapore that is all about natural, safe skincare for you and baby.

A Canadian-born brand, Ella’s Botanicals prides itself on making products that are 100% from nature. There are no ‘bad bits’ in their ingredients. This makes ideal baby/kid skincare, and I’ve been using two of their products for almost two months now.

BetterBeauty.sg - Ella's Botanicals
Ella’s Botanicals bubblemania – I was particularly keen on the the Bubblemania, as it’s a 3-in-1 Body Wash / Bubble Bath / Shampoo. I usually bring along a body wash as well as a shampoo when I travel, which is both bulky and risky (in case one leaks). I really liked the idea of having a combined product, and bonus points for being bubbly!

My biggest concern was that, being a 3-in-1 and being bubbly, it would dry out my kids’ skin or be too strong. However, I found the formulation very gentle on their skin (it didn’t feel ‘stripped’ or dry afterwards) and I particularly liked how it’s a super gentle, soap-free formula – 100% natural, biodegradable with olive oil, aloe and lightly scented with lavender essential oil.

I’ve actually used up our whole bottle now, because Hunter insisted on using it every evening (yes, it does generate lots of BUBBLES!).

BetterBeauty.sg - Ella's Botanicals

BetterBeauty.sg - Ella's Botanicals

Ella’s Botanicals bottoms up! diaper balm – The solid formula and tin packaging means this is very portable, you can even pop it into your diaper bag for you (works super well as a lipbalm and cuticle/hand balm!) and your baby.

Made with with olive oil infused with skin healing herbs, Ontario beeswax, organic fair trade shea butter and pure lavender essential oil, a swipe of this balm melts quickly on your fingers and thus spread easily on Carter’s bum. It smells good, too 🙂 I use it in his crotch folds (he is… ahem… slightly on the tubby side), to prevent chafing rash. I’ve also used it at night when his bum looks a little reddish, and its gone by morning.

The balm is multi-purpose and very gentle – it can be used on your baby’s dry skin, chapped lips, cradle cap, minor skin irritations, etc. [Psssstttttt: I’ve been using it when the kids take a tumble and get scrapes on their knees. You know when the scabs start to peel off a bit? They can get caught on stuff and yank right off – OUCH!! So I use a spot of this balm on the scab, and it softens it enough to prevent that].

What I like most about it? The balm is cloth diaper friendly!!

BetterBeauty.sg - Ella's Botanicals

I think Ella’s Botanicals is particularly effective for kids with more sensitive skins, and for parents that aren’t fans of heavily-scented products. It’s not easily available in shops around Singapore, but you can buy it online at BetterBeauty.sg (they stock a bunch of other international brands too, for mummy as well as baby!)
