Happy Birthday Beverly!

For my dear friend Beverly’s birthday, we gathered at a little Japanese / French place in Willoughby called A La Facon de Shimizu.

Girls dressed for the occasion. Like my new dress? Seduce factory outlet sale!

Fried Camembert cheese wheel that I split with Lisa (around $15). Super delicious!

Food porn shot.

Happy girls in summery dresses.

Neither the Japanese or French do vegetarian food particularly well, so it wasn’t a surprise that they didn’t have a single vegetarian main on the menu. They did however make me a fantastic dish on the spot to suit me – how very obliging! It was also big enough to feed two people, so if I go back I will ask for a half-serve!

Vegetarian pasta dish (Around $22).

Beverly, the beautiful birthday girl.

Blowing out the candles.

Tasty cake Chris organised.

I really loved that the restaurant was BYO and didn’t charge for corkage, and they also didn’t charge us cakage either! A really great evening.

Happy birthday Beverly!

Umaimon Japanese Restaurant

I saw a review for this little restaurant on the very excellent Grab Your Fork blog, which is also where I have sourced the pic below as the owner didn’t appreciate me taking pics!

Umaimon Japanese Restaurant is right near my work, but I’ve never noticed it before as it is quite tucked away.

My friend Isis agreed to try this little place out with me. We sat down outside so as to enjoy the balmy evening air, and were presented with three menus to peruse. Lots of choices, all in Japanese with brief, and somewhat interesting, descriptions.

We ordered edamame for appetiser to shade (about $4 for a bowl), and I ordered the stir fry energy vegetables ($8.90) plus steamed rice ($2.90 a bowl). Isis ordered chicken and tofu salad. Our food arrived quickly, in no particular order, and was delightfully fresh and perfectly cooked.

My energy vegetables had a bit of a punch to them – perhaps a lot of ginger in there? – and had lots of bean sprouts, which I just love.

Cute little bowl of rice

Stir fried energy vegetables.

The food was extremely reasonably priced and delicious. It was also packed with Japanese people, so I’m guessing it’s also a hit with the locals, which is another sign that it’s an authentic place to get very tasty Japanese cuisine.

Beverly’s Farewell

For Beverly’s last day at eBay Australia, I joined her and her work mates at The Loft for after work drinks and commiserating.

With a fellow Googler, Angela.

I started getting starving and insisted – rather aggressively I think – that we must go and eat. The only reasonably priced food joint nearby was Wagamama, so off we went for late-night noodles.

About to pass out – saved by noodles!

Delirium caused by hunger. Lol-isa wants nothing to do wiht my antics.

Bev loves noodles – as long as they aren’t udon.

Dessert – fried banana with coconut ice-cream.

The restaurant cleared out and we were the only people left.

Mmmmm dericious.

These sweet potato chips were addictive.

Romantic … and delirious at the same time.

It was a fun but also sad night as it was the farewell for many eBayers as well as Bev. It won’t be the same without you Bev, my dear!

Sakura Japanese Kitchen

Before seeing Body of Lies at the movies (which we both enjoyed, despite the bad reviews), Alec and I had dinner at my favourite noodle place on Pitt St, Sakura. Nothing special, just tasty noodles and great conversation before Alec had to head off to the USA for work once again.

He loves his picture being taken all the time, really he does.

As demonstrated when he tries to shoo me away with his chopsticks.

Alec’s huge bento box.

The same thing I always order – udon noodle soup and vegetables tempura.

Not amused by the chopstick attack from Alec.

Tired now! Too much noodle? Surely not!

Food, Fun & Friends

Beverly asked us all over for dinner during the long weekend.

She very sweetly made special food for a fussy vegetarian. I’m so grateful that I have such amazing friends who cater for me and my special tastes without complaining. Thanks, I love you guys 🙂

Amazing tomato and bocconcini salad.

Home-made garlic bread.

My vege patties and extra salad.

Alec gets up close and personal with a ferret.

Looking indignant.

Oh hai!

The cutest things!

Or maybe “cute” isn’t the right word.

Need dessert Bev?

Singed ferret! Jumping over tea lights ends with burned ferret.

Awesome custard tea cake that Bev made from scratch.

Obligatory food porn shot.

Happily fed and among friends.

Cuddles time!

Happy with great friends!

Night Out With Alec

Just a fun date night out. After watching WALL.e (which was awesome BTW) we had dinner at BBQ King, a well-known Chinese restaurant that we go to occasionally.

The picture is of lots of ducks strung up. Not very pleasant, but what the restaurant is known for – duck.

The interior. Packed and bustling as always.

Tea.

Alec’s short soup.

My vegetarian san choi bow.

Mixed veges with crispy noodles. Nice, but very similar to the one I have at BBQ Kitchen in Chatswood at a fraction of the price.

I hoe into the san choi bow.

Food bliss.

The city at night.

This busker had a guitar balanced on his head.

The perfect end to the evening – gelato!

I think Alec was sick of photos by this point but I can’t be sure.

Lunch at Machiavelli

I love traditional Italian food and have been wanting to try Machiavelli for quite a while. It’s on Clarence Street, Sydney, and I walk past it at least once a week.

Machiavelli is underground, which makes for an old-fashioned Italian tavern feeling. The restaurant is well-known for being the place to be seen if you’re a high-flying power-broker, and there are huge pictures on the walls of their patrons.

Tomato and mozzarella salad .. completely divine.

Anti-pasto platter. Our eyes were biger than our bellies.

My pesto and pine nut pasta. Completely delicious and massive.

Served with coffee.

Dessert – flambe strawberries and vanilla bean ice-cream.

While some of my dining friends may have thought it was pretty “old school” I absolutely loved the food and the service. I love old world dining and delicious hearty food, so it was complete bliss for me.

Sushi-Ya Noodles

I met up with Beverly and Lisa to indulge in noodles in Artarmon. The place we were heading to was actually closed on Tuesdays (d’oh!) so instead we went to Sushi-ya, which was a few shops down. Coincidently, Sushi-ya is directly across from my fave pizza place, LCC. We have often looked at the menu while waiting for our pizza, but never stepped inside.

Sushi-ya is right near Artarmon station, and is extremely popular. Because we hadn’t booked a table, we had to sit outside in a squished table – on a Tuesday night!

My huge plate of vege tempura – 12 pieces including sweet potato, pumpkin, zucchini.
Ramen noodles.

My potato cakes – deep fried with bits of corn in them.

My tempura was delightful, but I thought in all it was a bit pricey in comparison to other Japanese places we frequent. I will definitely be back though for another giant dish of the veges.

Dinner at Bev’s

My dear friend invited us over for a girlie night of puff pasty pizza and ferrets.

Bev … about to hack up something or another.

The makings of a very tasty salad – with rennet-free cheese.

Ummm I can’t even begin to explain this.

Bev starts on the pizzas.

Lol-isa can’t resist the feta.

Spreading on the topping.

LOL-ing.

My vege pizza with a corner of meat.

The meat-lovers’ pizza.

Covered in cheesy goodness.

Lise finishes up the salad.

Baked and ready!

After-dinner ferret-play.

There seems to be a ferret in the Tokidoki.

Or two!

What are you doing, naughty ferret?

“I am putting my head between my legs is what!”

When ferrets attack.

Acrobatics – trying out for Cirque du Soleil.

Tired and ready for snuggles.

Candice’s Hen’s Party

Another hen’s party this weekend, this time for my friend Candice. She chose to have a high tea at the Park Hyatt. The Park Hyatt is in a fabulous location on the water with a stunning view of the Opera House.

It is a very elegant place, very modern and chic in comparison to the QVB Tearoom, which is very “old world” elegance.

A back-lit shot of me.

The food! Bigger portions rather than a wider variety. The top tier contained the most divine chocolate mousse and Shortbread cups with cream and strawberries on top.

Next tiers – sandwiches (I had a very tasty egg and mayo). There were some mini vege quiches as well (they were cold and not very nice). Bottom layer were the scones. Very nice indeed – light and fluffy with a crispy edge.

Table full of ladies and delights.

My favourite part – the mousse.

With my dear friend Candice.

The view!

It was quite intimidating for me to go because I didn’t know any of Candice’s friends. Luckily she has a lot of very friendly friends who went out of their way to be extremely nice to me and get to know me. I ended up having the most delightful day. A perfect Saturday afternoon!
