Edward Scissorhands

I was really keen to see this stage show but didn’t manage to get tickets. A work colleague of mine sold me his the day before the show as he was unable to make it – really tough for him, but fabulous news for Rosalie and myself.

I saw the movie a long time ago and didn’t remember much of it – the show was faithful to the movie from what I remember, but what resonated most with me was the beautiful, haunting music.

The show was created by Matthew Bourne, and was a strange hybrid of dancing and what could almost be described as mime … it was very successful however and incredibly entertaining. The actor who played Edward was fabulous – as was the whole cast actually.

I would strongly recommend this show for anything who isn’t a big fan of musicals or dance shows as well as people who are.

The Chaser Age of Terror Variety Hour

I’ve long been a fan of the Chaser boys. I also find them to be quite hit and miss – so funny when they’re right on the mark, and groaningly bad when they do (and especially sing) things that I just think are in bad bad taste.

The Chaser live show, at the Enmore Theatre, is pretty similar in all aspects to the TV show – except there is way, way more singing. Can the boys sing? Um, no they can’t. Does it stop them? Of course it doesn’t!

The show included jokes about Heath Ledger (sorry, not ready for that yet – I’m still in mourning for Heath), Scientology and Tom Cruise (jokes like this NEVER get old), Kevin Rudd and many other prominent Australians. It also wouldn’t be the Chaser show without some George W. Bush bashing. Also always a pleasure.

The show only went for just over an hour, but it was high energy and completely entertaining. My favourite section was on internet dating, where the team created fake profiles of different kinds of girls to see if it was possible to find true love on the internet. Reading the real-life responses to these over-the-top profiles was insanely funny.

Billy Elliot – The Musical

I’ve been looking forward to seeing this show for months as it’s based very closely on the movie that I love.

I took Mum, Dad and some friends to see it at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney today for the 1:30 matinée.

I have to say, I was very impressed by the show adaptation of the movie – it managed to remain very true to both the story and feel of the film, and the addition of songs and more dance numbers only added to the experience.

What I think the show did best was blend the happiness, humour and the drive that makes dancers successful with the harsh lives of the pit miners in County Durham who are faced with pit closures and losing their jobs.

The kids were all amazing. So talented and engaging. The music was fabulous – very similar to in the movie, with lots of original songs as well. I also thought the staging was inventive, with moving sets that added to what was going on stage rather than distracting from it.

If you can still get tickets, I would highly recommend this show. Two very enthusiastic thumbs up.

Black Watch and Go Organic

Alec and I saw the National Theatre of Scotland perform Black Watch today as part of the Sydney Festival. The play came with rave reviews, so I went in with high expectations. It was lucky for me that the show really followed through. It was powerful, poignant and creative. I’ve never been touched by a play quite like I was by this one.

Black Watch tells the story of Scotland’s Black Watch Regiment, particularly focusing on their deployment in Iraq. The play reveals the harsh reality of the “war on terror” and the effects it has on soldiers mentally, both on deployment and when they come home and try to fit back into society again. I loved not only the content, but the creative staging. It’s an absolute must see.

After the play, we went to Go Organic on King St, Newtown, for late lunch. I left my camera at home, so these pics are taken with my trusty iPhone.

It was super expensive, but really tasty food. Hopefully the cost is improving me on the inside!

My muesli with yoghurt and berries, and mango yoghurt smoothie.

Taking time out on a Saturday afternoon.
