New Year’s Eve: Sydney 2014

This New Year’s Eve was a bit special for our little family. On every previous one, we’ve either stayed in and watched half a movie until we fell asleep (the one right after Cheese was born), or hired a babysitter so we could go out for a few hours.

This year, however, we were invited over a friend’s house to watch the 9pm fireworks, WITH THE CHEESE. Unprecedented. Also, until this year, I would have considered it a disastrous idea. The Cheese is a terrible sleeper, as I’ve been saying since she was born. We never let her stay up late as it results in an extremely tired and cranky child the next day – making it not worth the night out.

I desperately wanted to join the party we were invited to however, and we managed to make it work by getting Cheese to take a very late afternoon nap in the car – something I usually avoid at all costs since it means her bedtime gets pushed back a few hours.

She woke, refreshed and ready to party, at around 5pm. Perfect timing.

Our wonderful friends have an apartment that has a great view of Sydney Harbour, so fireworks at their house is a truly generous invitation.

We had a lovely time pre-fireworks eating, drinking and chatting, and then eating more and more, while the Cheese busied herself making friends with all of the adults at the party. By the end of the night, they were all her new best friend, and had seen her perform “Oh Mister Sun” about a hundred times, and enjoyed a ballet recital too.

When it came time for fireworks, Cheese was excited, and was amazed at what she was seeing in the night sky (something she rarely sees actually, since we’re always home before dark).

While we were home and in bed by 10pm, it was our first New Year’s Eve actually doing something as a family, making it a really wonderful and special night for us all.

I hope you had an equally memorable night with your loved ones. I’d love to know how you celebrated, too.

Happy New Year, let’s see what 2015 brings with it!

Goodbye 2012, Hello 2013!

Wow, what a year. It started out much as 2011 ended – with a hard, fussy, non-sleeping baby dominating our lives. Thankfully, by the time summer rolled around, everything improved by about 100%. We had a baby who slept! We slept! We had a wonderful summer and really enjoyed ourselves and getting to know a new, happier Eloise. I felt like a new person, not just hanging in there for dear life every day, but finally enjoying life again. It was wonderful to finally be able to really enjoy our baby and our lives together. We went out a lot, had playdates, went to galleries. What an an amazing life!

2012 was definitely the year for working out how we and Eloise could co-exist successfully as a family. I’m excited about 2013 – hopefully the year where Alec and I can start to focus again on what we want to achieve career-wise. For Alec, this involves quitting his job at Twitter to start his own business. For me, this means hoping to launch a freelance writing career to make some extra money as well as focusing on getting my own site/blog Brunch With My Baby off the ground.

As Eloise leaves her babyhood behind and turns into a toddler, we are loving getting to see her adorable personality developing. The little girl who is a daredevil, climbing and tumbling and throwing herself off stairs. The tiny person who adores music and dancing, and who loves to play jokes with us and laugh at everything.

2013 is looking to be quite an adventure again – I can’t wait to see what happens.

Goodbye 2011, Hello 2012

2011 was a mammoth year. It really shook things up not just in the obvious ways – new country, new baby – but it also challenged me mentally and emotionally, shaking me to the core. I hope I’ve emerged a stronger person out of it. I’m not good at doing things outside of my comfort zone, so I’m surprised that I was able to push myself to do four things this year that terrified me.

Terrifying thing one: Moving to New York. While pregnant. On my own. It was so hard. Alec had moved over 6 weeks before me, so I was left to tidy up loose ends and fly over on my own, all during the first trimester. The flight was awful. For some reason, I didn’t tell the crew I was pregnant and suffered in silence sitting next to the kitchen on the flight while the smell of food and coffee made me queasy. On the LA – NY leg I threw up. And again in the can from the airport. Everything from there on in was hard for the first few months. Finding a place to live. Finding doctors. Making new friends. All while pregnant. It was the hardest thing I had ever done up until that point.

Terrifying thing two: Quitting my job. After trying to transfer to the NY office for a few weeks, I was unable to find a suitable position and so quit my job. I was scared that without a job I would be bored and lonely and lack purpose. Thankfully this was not the case. I made new friends, took up yoga and attended a great photography course.

Terrifying thing three: Childbirth. The birth was horrific. No more needs to be said.

Terrifying thing four: What to do with a baby?! Having no experience with babies prior to having Eloise, I had no idea what to expect. I certainly didn’t expect this tiny person who screamed non stop and wouldn’t sleep. Ever, it seemed. Thankfully things slowly improved as the months went by, and now, even though Eloise still doesn’t sleep well, she is a delight to have.

What will 2012 hold? The focus will be on Eloise – getting her to sleep better for a start, then helping her develop as she grows. We also hope to travel more, to the Caribbean and somewhere in Europe. I also hope to focus again on photography – taking more courses and improving my skills, as well as making more local friends in Brooklyn. I want to experience everything New York has to offer while we’re living there.

New Year’s Eve 2009/2010

What a way to end and start a year. With everything going on we decided to make sure this New Year’s was fun and a bit special. We have had a lot of international and interstate guests so wanted to show them a real Sydney New Year’s.

Ready to go – Alec and me with Masa.
Stop one – fondue party at Greg’s house. Greg made up two cheese and one chocolate fondue. I should have exercised restraint at this stage as I paid for my gluttony shortly after.
CHEESE!

Next stop was dinner at Sugaroom in Pyrmont. We had a four-course meal before walking to the office to watch the fireworks. We scored the private room near my desk so we could watch the view uninterrupted.
Midnight – happy new year!!

Pretty!

We start to lose the bridge to smoke…

But it makes a return towards the end.

The calm aftermath.

The only bad thing about NYE is getting home again afterwards! We didn’t get home till 3:30am as we had to wait till 2:30 before we could leave the building due to road closures and traffic…
It was a great night though and I hope our guests enjoyed themselves.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

New Year Ponderings

I usually am the anti-NYE person. I avoid parties and large crowds because drunk, obnoxious people drive me up the wall. After a few days at home however, I was itching to get out and socalise a bit this NYE. Daniel wanted to show his Slovakian girlfriend, Hedviga, the fireworks, so Alec and I tagged along for firework-hunting adventure.

I haven’t attempted to see the fireworks for about eight or nine years, so it was a lot of fun! We caught the train to Milson’s Point and watched the 9pm fireworks over the side of a balcony of a garage that we stumbled upon.

We were planning to go back to Chatswood, pick up my SLR and drive to somewhere near Taronga Zoo to watch the midnight fireworks, but we met up with Aya and Matt Cooper for a while, then decided we couldn’t be bothered to go back to Chatswood. Instead, we stumbled across an alley near Luna Park that had an amazing view of the bridge. We set up here on an electrical box at about 11pm, and waited, waited, waited…

Our patience was rewarded with stunning fireworks over the harbour. I managed to get some semi-decent photos by balancing my little snappy-cam on a stop sign near the electrical box.

The mood in the city was just electric – and chaotic! So many crazy people, mostly just enjoying themselves.

Getting home was quite the challenge. Milson’s Point station was closed to avoid people getting crushed, so we walked to North Sydney station – where we ended up getting a very slow bus back to Chatswood.

I had such a great night – the fireworks were just stunning and the company was a lot of fun too.

Me and Alec, at midnight.

New Year Resolutions
I try not to make any as I invariably fail, but here I go:
  • Eat less
  • Exercise more
  • Find something that I love doing
  • Do only one thing at a time
  • Stop nagging Alec
  • Shop less, save more
  • Be a kinder, gentler person
  • Take more photos on my DSLR
  • Enter more photography competitions
  • Write more – for myself, not work
Great Things To Look Forward To In 2009
  • Europe / USA trip in July. I can’t wait!
  • Beverly’s wedding in August
  • My 30th birthday in Singapore
  • Shelleys’ wedding in December
  • Mel’s wedding in December
  • Possible Bora Bora trip in October
  • New house and living with the puppies again

New Year’s Eve At Home

With both Alec and I sick, we decided to spend NYE at home. It was a nice night actually. I tried cooking some different food and we watched new Heroes episodes.

Our little tree in its pot.

My gingerbread man tree decoration I bought this year.

Haloumi and tomato entree.

Trying to present it properly.

The main course – pasta salad wrap. It has all kinds of healthy things in it – asparagus, zucchini, peas, broccolini, semi-dried tomatoes and ricotta. It was really easy to make too!

2007 Wrap-Up and 2008 Plans

It’s been a full-on year. Lots of travel. Lots going on. Lots of changes. All in all, a good year.

Some highlights:

  • Queensland trip in Jan and learning to SCUBA dive with Alec.
  • USA trip in March and seeing the Grand Canyon and Monument Valley with Alec.
  • Moving in with Alec in April.
  • Best birthday ever thanks to Alec.
  • More work published again on the Google Australia blog.
  • Getting into netball again – running a team, holding an eBay challenge event and raising over $2k for the RSPCA.
  • Getting fit! I started running into work, dancing more, climbing more.
  • Europe trip in Sept with Alec. Seeing Rome and Venice.
  • Starting a blog and photo blog.
  • Improving my photography – the macro lens certainly helped!
  • Turning vegetarian. I’ve wanted to do this for a long time.

What I would like to achieve next year:

  • Job satisfaction – making sure I’m doing what I want to be doing.
  • Getting fit and well. I’ve lost a lot of fitness while I’ve been sick. I want to shake off the sickness and get back into my exercise routine.
  • Further improving my photography, particularly learning to use my camera better and indoor lighting.
  • Take at least one photo every day.
  • Travel! I want to see Japan.
  • Personally, I would like to be more relaxed and a lot less stressed. I need to have more confidence in myself and my abilities. I think that’s the way to less stress for me. I also need to speak up more about things that I’m not happy about. I tend to let things slide for the sake of keeping the peace, in all situations, and get angry about it on the inside. I think it would be not only healthier for me, but helpful for other people if I was braver and spoke up more. Again, it comes down to confidence in myself.
  • I also need to shop less, and save and budget better. Surely I don’t need MORE clothes?!
  • I want to learn more. Even if it’s just reading more books, I want to finish up 2008 with as much knowledge as I can cram into my head, particularly in areas like history and environment.
  • Get my puppies back living with me. I miss them daily.
